Job summary

Sundt Construction is seeking a Senior Quality Inspector to oversee complex inspections across construction projects. You will ensure compliance with contract documents, codes, and standards, acting as a SME and mentoring junior staff.

Lead QA/QC activities, coordinate third-party testing, manage quality records, and drive corrective actions. Strong communication and leadership are essential for interfacing with clients and engineering teams.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of quality inspection experience in construction, heavy civil, infrastructure, industrial, or fabrication environments.
  • Deep knowledge of applicable codes and standards (AWS, AISC, ASME, API, ASTM, ACI, ICC, ISO).
  • Demonstrated experience with complex QA/QC processes, welding and bolting inspections, and structural/mechanical systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong attention to detail.
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Proficiency with inspection equipment and NOE methods; ability to analyze complex inspection results.
  • Strong understanding of Quality Management Systems (e.g., ISO 9001), document control, and audit procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct audits, surveillance, and assessments to ensure quality processes across trades.
  • Coordinate and supervise third-party testing and inspection services.
  • Interface with clients, regulatory authorities, and internal teams during inspections, audits, and walkdowns.
  • Lead and perform advanced inspections of materials, welds, structural assemblies, equipment installations, and construction activities per ITPs and standards.
  • Manage and maintain project quality records, including inspection reports, NCRs, CARs, and test data.
  • Mentor, train, and support Quality Inspector I and II personnel; provide feedback and technical support.
  • Oversee development and enforcement of QCPs, ITPs, and project inspection procedures.
  • Perform root cause analysis for significant quality issues and drive corrective actions.
  • Review and interpret complex drawings and documents to guide quality requirements.
  • Support the Quality Manager in preparing metrics, reporting, and continuous improvement.

The Senior Quality Inspector serves as a subject matter expert and mentor, provides technical leadership to junior quality personnel, and acts as a key liaison between field operations, engineering, and quality management.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct audits, surveillance, and assessments to ensure the effectiveness of quality processes across multiple trades or disciplines.
  • Coordinate and supervise third-party testing and inspection services.
  • Interface with clients, regulatory authorities, and internal teams during inspections, audits, and walkdowns.
  • Lead and perform advanced inspections of materials, welds, structural assemblies, equipment installations, and construction activities in accordance with ITPs, specifications, and relevant standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, AISC, ASME, API, ACI).
  • Manage and maintain project quality records, including inspection reports, nonconformance reports (NCRs), corrective action requests (CARs), and test data.
  • Mentor, train, and support Quality Inspector I and II personnel; provide performance feedback and technical support.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and enforcement of Quality Control Plans (QCPs), Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and project-specific inspection procedures.
  • Perform root cause analysis for significant quality issues and drive corrective and preventive actions.
  • Review and interpret complex drawings, project documents, and technical standards to provide guidance on quality requirements.
  • Support the Quality Manager in the preparation of quality metrics, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • 7+ years of quality inspection experience in construction, heavy civil, infrastructure, industrial, or fabrication environments.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to; steel-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.)
  • May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis
  • May stoop, kneel, or bend, on an occasional basis.
  • May use telephone, computer system, email, or other electronic devices to communicate with internal and external customers or vendors.
  • Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures.
  • Occasionally will climb stairs, ladders, etc.
  • Required to use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry or feel objects on a frequent basis.
  • Will interact with people frequently during a shift/workday.
  • Will lift, push or pull objects up to 50Ibs on an occasional basis.
  • Will sit, stand or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift/workday.
  • Will work various shifts, including swing, night and weekend.
