Job summary

Edge Autonomy in Ann Arbor, MI is seeking a Quality Inspector II to perform complex dimensional, visual, and functional inspections of parts and assemblies in an AS9100 environment. The role involves interpreting GD&T, leading FAI activities, and guiding junior inspectors.

Responsibilities include using CMMs and optical comparators, documenting NCRs, and ensuring quality records. The ideal candidate has aerospace experience and meticulous attention to detail.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or associate degree preferred.
• 3 to 5 years of inspection experience, including 2+ years in aerospace/defense manufacturing.
• Interpret complex drawings and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
• Proficiency with precision measuring equipment, including CMM and optical comparators.
• Working knowledge of FAI and AS9102 requirements.
• Experience documenting nonconformances and supporting root-cause and corrective-action activities.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex receiving, in-process, source, and final inspection of machined parts, electromechanical assemblies, and special-process product against engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
• Interpret complex engineering drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
• Operate precision inspection equipment, including coordinate measuring machines (CMM), optical comparators, height gauges, and surface-finish instruments.
• Plan and complete first article inspections (FAI) and prepare FAI reports in accordance with AS9102.
• Initiate and document nonconformance reports (NCR), accurately characterize defects, and support MRB activities.
• Verify special-process and outside-processing certifications against applicable specifications.
• Review inspection and measurement data for completeness and accuracy and ensure proper retention of quality records.
• Provide work direction, training, and technical guidance to Quality Inspector I personnel.
• Support internal audits, calibration control, FOD, and ESD program requirements.
• Adhere to all quality, safety, ITAR/EAR, and environmental requirements applicable to the work area.

SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range for this role is $23.00 to $32.00 per hour. This range reflects a good faith estimate based on the targeted level for the role and typical compensation benchmarks across U.S. locations. Actual compensation may vary depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, geographical location, and internal alignment.

Summary

Quality Inspector II performs complex dimensional, visual, and functional inspection of parts, assemblies, and special process work, including first article inspection (FAI) in accordance with AS9102, within an AS9100 certified aerospace and defense manufacturing environment. Exercising moderate independent judgment, the incumbent interprets complex drawings and GD&T, initiates nonconformance documentation, and provides guidance to entry level inspectors.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or associate degree in a related field preferred.
• 3 to 5 years of inspection experience, including 2 or more years in an aerospace or defense manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret complex drawings and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
• Proficiency with precision measuring equipment, including CMM and optical comparators.
• Working knowledge of first article inspection (FAI) and AS9102 requirements.
• Experience documenting nonconformances and supporting root-cause and corrective-action activities.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

• ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or equivalent certification.
• Experience with CMM programming and software (for example, PC DMIS or Calypso).
• Familiarity with AS9100, MRB processes, and customer-specific quality requirements.
• Experience inspecting electronic, battery, or fuel cell assemblies.

Vision is necessary for reading printed materials and a computer screen, while hearing and speech are essential for effective communication both in person and over the telephone. Additionally, the position may necessitate travel by air or automobile. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coats, to ensure safety in the production environment. Employees may be able to lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
