Job summary

Job description

The quality engineer is responsible for designing quality standards, inspecting materials, equipment, processes and products, developing quality controls, and determining corrective actions. Works with teams to ensure the overall quality of the manufactured product across the production process. Reports to Director of Quality and Engineering.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Interprets and comprehends product requirements through prints, engineering specifications and other forms of product requirement.
  • Actively participates in defining inspection requirements, justification of acceptance limits and sampling plans to assure compliance with requirements.
  • Reviews and comments on drawings, calculations, specifications and other design inputs/outputs.
  • Applies problem‑solving and quality improvement tools and techniques (includes planning tools, quality tools, PA’s, CA’s).
  • Provides CAR and 8D responses as needed to customers.
  • Initiates internal CAR and 8D requests as needed.
  • Applies quality cost concepts and techniques to minimize production costs.
  • Audits quality and business management systems for deficiencies, identification and correction.
  • Works in a team environment to support other business units.
  • Plans, controls and assures product and process quality and application in accordance with quality principles (design and manufacturing).
  • Acquires and analyzes data using appropriate standard quantitative methods to facilitate process analysis and improvements.
  • Applies Advanced Product Quality Planning principles for new product introduction readiness.
  • Provides direction in developing inspection plans, First Article Inspection, In‑Process and Final Product Inspection, sampling plans, inspection and acceptance criteria and Design Validation Testing.
  • Performs product and process evaluations to identify areas for improvement, recommends solutions to identified problems, and implements approved changes using sound quality engineering principles while fully documenting requirements on a timely basis.
  • Provides lessons learned and issues management support.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains quality documentation, in accordance with established procedures, to ensure that all documents are filed, controlled, and made readily accessible to people who need the information.
  • Provides leadership to project teams when called upon to do so.
  • Coordinates with customer reaction plans to address non‑conformities that arise.
  • Helps facilitate continuous improvement and learning across all functional areas through training and communication of quality initiatives.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Operates computers and software such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc., related to managing the Quality Management System.
  • Is a creative and progressive thinker with problem‑solving skills.
  • Has understanding of quality philosophies, principles, systems, methods, tools, standards, customer expectations, supplier performance, improvement systems and professional ethics.
  • Has thorough understanding of GD&T.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • 4‑year degree in engineering or a related field preferred.
  • 4‑6 years of demonstrated experience on a quality team in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience with PowerInspect software.
  • Experience with light fabrication and leak‑proof vessel fabrication preferred.
  • Experience with statistical process control.
  • Experience with ISO conformance preferred.
