Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Inspects data and product at various stages of production to determine, maintain, and improve the quality and reliability of product. Works within Superior Thread Rolling Co. Quality Management System procedures and work instructions to maintain and improve inspection, calibration, and customer returns; responds to and implements corrective action requests as an active Corrective Action Board (CAB) member. Generates and submits rework planning for review and approval. Performs PR and MRB Dispositions as an active MRB Member. Works closely with Account Managers and Supply Chain on supplier approval and corrective actions. Performs other procurement quality activities as necessary. Serves as member of the non-conforming material control process system. Develop and report NC trend analysis data and charts to the Quality Manager and takes appropriate action to mitigate trends. Monitors and reports on the Cost of Scrap (CoS). Provides support during internal and external customer audits. Identifies and acts upon areas of needed improvement. Assists with all other quality functions through teamwork with members of the quality and production teams.

DAILY JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Maintain organized work area(s) in compliance with basic 6S principles.
  • Evaluate non-conforming material/product for disposition and corrective actions. Assumes all responsibilities as a Non-Conforming (NC) material process owner and MRB member.
  • Review and complete evaluation and disposition of customer returns.
  • Responsible for the Corrective Action system throughput and CAB Actions Log. Answers all internal and customer corrective actions and manage supplier corrective actions. Works with all departments to ensure communication of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Serve as Customer and Supplier liaison and POC for quality concerns.
  • Contact the vendor/supplier prior to returning parts to determine the correct point of contact, build the relationship, and discuss:
    - The non-conformance, limitations of the process, inspection methods, and potential root cause/corrective actions.
    - Responsibility assignment and cost allocation for rework.
    - The rework/reprocessing required to bring parts into conformance.
    - The inspection method and documentation that STR will require.
    - The turnaround time required to reprocess the non-conforming parts.
  • Follow up with the supplier to ensure the committed turnaround time is on track for on-time completion.
  • Update Job Memos with this information to keep the STR team informed of progress.
  • Maintain various electronic quality logs and records (NC Trends, CAB Log, CoS Metrics).
  • Interface regularly with Account Managers, Production Control, Customer Quality Representatives, Suppliers, and Supply Chain Management.
WEEKLY JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Participate in Corrective Action Board meetings.
MONTHLY JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Monitor and report the monthly Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ) to the Quality Manager.
  • Properly dispose of scrap material and update the STR scrap log in accordance with STR policies and procedures.
PERFORM AS NEEDED
  • Perform all facets of the inspection process per the appropriate STR procedure or work instruction, including but not limited to first article inspection, in-process inspection, first piece inspection, certifications, calibration, receiving inspection, corrective action response, rejection investigation, customer return investigation, internal audits, and final inspection.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, diagrams, and/or formulas; confer with management staff when a discrepancy exists.
  • Participate in APQP/PPAP package generation (FMEA, Control Plans, Gage R&R, and process flow diagrams).
  • Conduct Failure Analysis investigations as required.
  • Review and approve AS9102 packages as needed.
  • Generates and submits for review and approval new and revised planning, in cooperation with engineering.
  • Perform Production Quantity Changes.
  • May occasionally perform metallurgical sample preparation and inspection.
  • Provide support for internal and external customer audits.
  • Suggest and recommend modifications and improvements to the quality system, inspection process, and manufacturing processes, as applicable.
  • Generate and update CARs and SCARs.
  • Serve as a CAB member.
  • Maintain and update corrective action records.
  • Respond to Customer Corrective Actions as necessary.
  • Assist the Quality Manager in reporting selected data to the management team on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Assist in performing supplier audits and evaluations.
  • Assist in maintaining the STR Approved Supplier List (ASL).
  • Record all direct and indirect labor performed on jobs and other quality-related duties.
  • Aid customer source inspectors during in-process or final source inspections when needed.
  • Perform other quality-related duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Required:
  • Minimum of 5 years of related aerospace Quality Engineer experience, or equivalent trade school, vocational education, or apprenticeship.
  • Demonstrated experience with Root Cause Analysis and problem-solving methodologies.
  • Familiarity with APQP/PPAP package generation.
  • Proficiency in ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
  • Extensive experience with all aspects of metal manufacturing processes and special processing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in time management
  • Must be a self-starter capable of working in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Desired:
  • ASQ certification (Quality Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or Quality/OE System Management).
  • AS9100 Internal Auditor Certification
  • Green Belt or higher certification in Six Sigma principles.
  • Evidence of significant training or certification in Lean principles with documented successes.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Manufacturing Engineering and/or Quality Engineering.
  • Certification in Statistical Process Control methodology and techniques.
  • Training and Experience:
  • Experienced working in team environment essential.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is required to: - Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor. - Exert up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, and/or - Exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently.

VISUAL ACUITY

Near acuity and accommodation are required for reading machine dial gages, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of parts.

HEARING ABILITY

Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Working environment includes office atmosphere as well as machine shop environment. May be subjected to: - High noise levels from operating machines - Physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts - Breathing fumes and dust - Skin exposure to oils, etchants and/or cutting fluid
