Job summary

Orange EV is seeking a Quality Engineer in Kansas City, KS to own quality outcomes across the product lifecycle. The role blends Supplier Quality Engineering and Customer Quality Engineering to reduce defects at the source and rapidly resolve field issues.

You'll work with Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Service to tighten supplier controls, lead 8D investigations, and monitor quality KPIs. Travel to supplier sites is occasional.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 3+ years of quality engineering experience in supplier and customer/field quality roles.
• Proficient with PPAP, APQP, FMEA, 8D, root cause analysis and control plans.
• Experience conducting supplier audits or assessments and corrective actions.
• Experience solving field or customer quality issues with warranty/field data.
• Strong analytical skills and knowledge of SPC, Cpk/Ppk.
• Excellent written and verbal communication across suppliers, customers and internal teams.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Quality Engineer owns quality outcomes on both ends of the product lifecycle – working upstream with suppliers to keep defects out of incoming parts, and downstream with customers and the field to resolve issues quickly and drive them back to root cause. This dual Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE) and Customer Quality Engineering (CQE) scope makes this a connective role: you'll use what you learn in the field to tighten supplier controls, and what you know about supplier processes to speed up field investigations. You'll work closely with Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Service to keep quality moving in the right direction across the business.

Position Responsibilities

Supplier Quality Engineering

• Lead supplier quality activities, including incoming inspection oversight, supplier audits/assessments, and PPAP/APQP review and approval for new or changed parts.
• Drive supplier corrective action requests (SCARs) and root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why, fishbone) for supplier-caused nonconformances.
• Partner with Purchasing and Supply Chain to qualify new suppliers and monitor ongoing supplier performance (scorecards, PPM, quality trends).
• Review supplier control plans and FMEAs, and support supplier development initiatives that improve quality and cost at the source.

Customer Quality Engineering

• Investigate and resolve customer-reported quality issues and field complaints in partnership with Service and Engineering.
• Lead root cause analysis and corrective action (8D) for field and warranty issues, including containment and verification of effectiveness.
• Analyze warranty and field data to identify trends, prioritize improvement opportunities, and report findings to leadership.

Shared / Cross-Functional

• Maintain and improve the quality management system (QMS) and related documentation, including procedures, work instructions, and control plans.
• Support internal audits and continuous improvement activities (Lean, Six Sigma, kaizen).
• Apply statistical quality tools (SPC, Cpk/Ppk) to monitor process and product performance.
• Track and report quality KPIs, including supplier PPM, customer PPM, warranty rate, and cost of quality.

Position Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• 3+ years of quality engineering experience that includes demonstrated work in both supplier quality engineering and customer/field quality engineering.
• Working knowledge of core quality tools: PPAP, APQP, FMEA, 8D, root cause analysis, and control plans.
• Experience conducting supplier audits or assessments and managing corrective action processes.
• Experience investigating and resolving field or customer quality issues, including the use of warranty or field data.
• Strong analytical skills, with comfort using statistical quality tools (SPC, Cpk/Ppk).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across suppliers, customers, and internal teams.
• Willingness to travel occasionally to supplier and customer sites.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in automotive, heavy-duty truck, or industrial equipment manufacturing.
• ASQ certification (CQE, CSQP) or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.
• Experience with electric vehicle components, such as batteries, motors, or high-voltage systems.
• Experience working within ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 quality management systems, and with QMS or ERP software.
• Root Cause Problem Solving – systematically diagnoses supplier and field issues down to true root cause, not just symptoms.
• Cross-Functional Influence – gets alignment and action from suppliers, customers, Engineering, and Service without direct authority over them.
• Data-Driven Analysis – uses quality, warranty, and supplier data to prioritize issues and measure the impact of corrective actions.
• Relationship Management – builds collaborative relationships with suppliers and customers while holding firm on quality standards.
• Attention to Detail – catches nonconformances, documentation gaps, and process drift that others might miss.
• Clear Communication – translates technical quality issues into findings and action plans that suppliers, customers, and leadership can act on.
