Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing on inspection and sampling plans.
  • Develop and improve inspection systems using SPC and data analysis.
  • Support quality systems development, auditing, and corrective actions.
  • Lead root cause analyses and document corrective actions (8D, 5-Why, A-3).
  • Analyze quality data to identify risk reduction and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing to control processes and address variation.

JOB SUMMARY

The Quality Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and completing broadly defined quality engineering assignments and small projects that support product and process quality, compliance, and customer satisfaction. This role provides technical support across Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Purchasing; uses data-driven methods such as Statistical Process Control (SPC) and structured problem solving to identify and resolve quality issues; and helps ensure customer and contractual requirements are consistently met in a high-mix electronics manufacturing environment. The Quality Engineer also supports quality system effectiveness, internal audits, corrective action, and continuous improvement initiatives at the Ann Arbor, MI facility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provide technical support to Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing regarding product and process inspection, audit requirements, sampling plans, process controls, and statistical applications.
  • Set up, develop, and continuously improve inspection systems, methods, and techniques using data analysis, SPC, auditing, and other appropriate quality tools.
  • Support development, implementation, and maintenance of quality systems, procedures, and controls; assist with systems auditing to verify compliance and effectiveness.
  • Provide technical support to Purchasing regarding supplier capability, quality status, inspection and test methods, supplier-related nonconformance, and resolution of quality issues.
  • Lead or support root cause analysis and prepare corrective action documentation using structured problem-solving methods such as 8D, 5-Why, and A-3.
  • Maintain accurate and current quality system documentation, records, procedures, work instructions, and other controlled quality information.
  • Conduct internal quality audits and support audit preparation, reporting, corrective actions, and timely follow-up to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Analyze quality trends, inspection results, process data, and other performance indicators to identify opportunities for risk reduction, defect prevention, and process improvement.
  • Partner with Engineering and Manufacturing to establish effective process controls, address sources of variation, and support improvements in quality, yield, and consistency.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with customer Quality organizations to ensure key characteristics, technical requirements, and contractual quality expectations are understood and met.
  • Validate the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions; monitor results and communicate lessons learned and best practices across applicable processes and teams.
  • Support quality initiatives associated with new product introduction, process changes, customer requirements, and other activities that may affect product or process quality.
  • Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement and team facilitation activities focused on reducing variation, preventing defects, and strengthening process capability.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Quality, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3–5 years of experience in engineering, quality, manufacturing, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related technical field.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across functional teams.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in electronics or electronic component manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of electronic component manufacturing processes, inspection methods, and process controls.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IPC-610, ISO 9001, and AS 9100 requirements.
  • Knowledge of quality systems, quality engineering techniques, process control, SPC, auditing, corrective action, and team facilitation methods.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based quality systems or other business applications.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) certification preferred, or willingness to pursue certification.
  • Knowledge or experience with MIL SPC 38534.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

On-site role based at Spectrum Control’s manufacturing facility in Ann Arbor, MI. Combination of office and manufacturing floor environment, with regular interaction with Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, inspection, and testing functions. Requires the ability to work effectively in a hands‑on manufacturing setting and respond to quality issues as they arise.
