Schedule:

Full-time; up to 65 hours per week as operational demands require; Saturday availability required on a regular basis

Position Summary

The Quality Control Technician is responsible for implementing and maintaining quality assurance methods and procedures to ensure that concrete products and raw materials are produced in full conformance with established specifications and customer requirements. Operating within the Technical Services department, this position conducts laboratory and field testing across plant sites, certifies concrete loads for specification-governed projects, and provides technical guidance to plant and operations personnel. The Quality Control Technician plays a critical role in upholding product integrity, supporting regulatory compliance, and ensuring that Chaney Enterprises delivers consistently high-quality materials to its customers. This position requires frequent travel to company and customer sites and demands a high degree of technical accuracy, independent judgment, and professional communication.

The following duties are considered essential functions of this position. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs specimen testing of concrete sampled from random loads, special jobs, and unique mix designs; prepares accurate test reports in accordance with departmental and specification requirements.
  • Conducts aggregate and batch plant testing, including daily gradation and moisture tests on all concrete produced for State and specification-governed projects across all assigned regions, ensuring continuous compliance with applicable standards.
  • Certifies concrete loads delivered to specification jobs in accordance with State Highway Administration/Department of Transportation requirements; verifies proper mixing procedures, load timing, and delivery documentation prior to certification.
  • Performs quality assurance testing on trial batches of new concrete mix designs under close-tolerance conditions; analyzes results and makes systematic adjustments until the mixture achieves full specification compliance.
  • Executes laboratory tests including gradation, moisture content, lightweight particle, and specific gravity analyses on aggregate materials to verify suitability for production use.
  • Oversees the execution of unique or large-volume jobs with restrictive specifications; monitors all stages of material production and delivery to confirm that product standards are maintained throughout.
  • Selects and prepares samples of materials requiring third-party certification or testing beyond departmental capability; coordinates transport of those samples to the appropriate testing agency and tracks results.
  • Troubleshoots quality-related issues in coordination with customers and internal stakeholders; analyzes specific conditions, quantities, and situational variables to identify root causes and implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Provides technical assistance and on-site training to plant managers, equipment operators, yard personnel, and drivers as requested; communicates quality standards and procedural expectations clearly and professionally.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation of all testing activities, certification records, inspection findings, and corrective actions in accordance with departmental record‑keeping standards.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement within quality assurance operations and collaborates with department leadership to evaluate and implement enhancements that increase efficiency or product quality.
  • Maintains the cleanliness, organization, and safety of laboratory facilities and field equipment; performs routine equipment checks and reports deficiencies to ensure readiness for ongoing testing operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with State Highway Administration/Department of Transportation specifications and specification-governed concrete project requirements.
  • Experience operating batch plant equipment or laboratory testing instruments used in concrete and aggregate analysis.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required, with demonstrated mathematical competency; an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position will also be considered.

Outdoor Work Exposure
The incumbent regularly works outdoors at plant sites, stockpile areas, and customer job sites and is subject to varying weather and temperature conditions.

Indoor Laboratory Setting
A portion of work is performed in a laboratory environment involving testing equipment, chemical admixtures, and aggregate materials.

Exposure to Dust and Particulates
Regular exposure to concrete dust, aggregate particulates, and related airborne materials is expected in both field and plant settings.

Exposure to Heavy Equipment
The incumbent works in proximity to heavy construction and plant equipment; adherence to all applicable safety protocols is required.

Uneven Terrain
Field assignments may involve working on uneven ground, gravel stockpiles, and active plant or job site surfaces.
