Job summary

Alamo Group’s Alamo Industrial division seeks a Quality Control Supervisor to lead on-site quality control across fabrication, machining, welding, and assembly. The role focuses on maintaining quality standards, inspecting processes, and driving corrective actions on the production floor.

Responsibilities include monitoring metrics, leading audits, coordinating with purchasing and supply chain, and mentoring QC staff to ensure conformance with drawings and customer requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing, engineering, industrial technology, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive manufacturing experience preferably in quality assurance or quality control.
  • Experience with ISO 9000 and internal audits is preferred.

Job description

The Quality Control Supervisor is responsible for leading and maintaining all quality control activities within a heavy equipment and machinery manufacturing environment. This position is highly hands-on and spends significant time on the production floor working directly with manufacturing, engineering, welding, machining, assembly, purchasing, and supply chain teams to ensure products meet customer requirements, engineering specifications, and company quality standards.

The role oversees incoming, in-process, and final inspections; manages corrective actions; leads root cause investigations; drives continuous improvement initiatives; and maintains compliance with applicable quality management systems. This role serves as the primary advocate for product quality while balancing operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and manufacturing throughput.

The role aligns with the responsibilities of a Quality Supervisor and supports the organization's quality management system through product and process quality monitoring.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Lead and manage the facility's quality control function; establish and maintain quality standards, inspection procedures, and testing protocols.
  • Develop and monitor plant quality metrics such as First Pass Yield, Scrap and Rework, Customer Returns, Internal Defects, Warranty Claims, Cost of Poor Quality, etc.
  • Promote a culture of quality ownership throughout the organization and serve as the primary point of contact for customer quality concerns.
  • Takes a “Hands-On” Shop Floor Quality Control approach within production areas auditing products, processes, and workmanship.
  • Conduct routine inspections of fabrication operations, CNC machining processes, welding operations, paint and finishing processes, mechanical and hydraulic assemblies and final equipment testing
  • Verify compliance with engineering drawings, bills of material, work instructions, and customer requirements; assist production personnel with interpretation of specifications and quality requirements.
  • Use precision measuring equipment to validate product conformity.
  • Direct containment activities when quality concerns are identified.
  • Maintain compliance with company quality management systems and applicable industry standards.
  • Lead internal quality audits and support external customer and certification audits.
  • Lead investigations of customer complaints, warranty issues, supplier defects, and internal nonconformances; drive corrective and preventive actions through completion.
  • Partner with Purchasing and Supply Chain teams to improve supplier performance; review supplier quality trends and performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering and Operations to improve process capability and product consistency.
  • Participate in new product launches and engineering change implementation.
  • Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and develop quality personnel; establish employee performance objectives and training plans to ensure inspectors and technicians are properly trained on quality standards and inspection techniques.
  • Promote accountability and professional development within the department and across the plant.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Knowledge of production processes, quality control, raw materials, safety, and other techniques for maximizing the effective quality manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Working understanding of Lean processes and practices.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9000 standards and internal audit requirements.
  • Knowledge of today’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software (JDE preferred), and quality management systems.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards and expectations of service, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and agency rules associated with quality product manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and general accounting principles and practices.
  • Skilled and proficient with the use of personal computers; including quality assurance documentation and generic mainstream office software (i.e., Microsoft Excel, Visio, Word, etc.)
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to a problem.
  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate/implement options and solutions
  • Ability to motivate, develop, and direct people to perform at their highest potential with the ability to identify and place the best people in the right job.
  • Ability to build and foster effective business relationships with vendors, customers, and other departments within the organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to formulate and deliver ideas and material in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to work irregular and/or long hours including weekends and holidays as quality, production, and/or customer schedules dictate.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, engineering, industrial technology, or related field; or a combination of education and /or experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive manufacturing experience preferably in quality assurance or quality control.

Working Conditions:

A mix of office environment indoors with frequent walking in and around a non-climate controlled metal manufacturing plant. May be required to travel occasionally by automobile and/or common air carrier, with overnight stays a possibility. Occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of 20 pounds, stooping, reaching, bending, and climbing in and around fabricated metal parts and manufacturing equipment in the performance of product testing, investigation, and inspection.
