Position: Quality Control Manager

Location: Commerce, CA (On-site)

Classification: Exempt

Reports To: Shop Manager and Executive Leadership

Compensation: Based on Experience

Overview:

A structural steel fabrication company based in Commerce, CA is seeking a skilled Quality Control Manager to support and uphold its quality management processes. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring all fabrication activities meet stringent industry standards and project specifications. The position involves hands-on inspections, documentation, and collaboration with both shop personnel and management to deliver high-quality results across commercial steel projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Oversee daily quality inspection activities in accordance with AISC, AWS, and related structural steel standards.
• Perform inspections on fabricated parts, welds, bolts, finishes, and assembled components to verify conformance to design specs.
• Manage quality documentation such as Material Test Reports (MTRs), Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and welder qualifications.
• Track and document Nonconformance Reports (NCRs), implement corrective/preventive actions, and verify resolution.
• Coordinate inspections at key stages — material receiving, fabrication, and final output — ensuring proper records and sign-offs.
• Monitor shipping and receiving to ensure all incoming and outgoing materials meet quality standards and are properly labeled.
• Utilize fabrication software (Tekla PowerFab or similar) to document and track quality-related activities.
• Assist in preparing for and participating in audits, including annual compliance checks.
• Provide guidance and training to shop staff on inspection methods and fabrication standards.
• Communicate with project stakeholders (internal and external) to resolve quality concerns or address Requests for Information (RFIs).
• Occasionally conduct on-site measurements or surveys at local job locations within the LA area (mileage reimbursement provided).

Requirements:

• Minimum of 5 years in a quality control role within the steel fabrication industry.
• Proficiency with measurement tools and strong attention to dimensional accuracy.
• Deep understanding of AISC, AWS D1.1, and related structural steel fabrication codes.
• Experience using fabrication tracking software such as Tekla PowerFab (or equivalent).
• Solid grasp of fabrication processes, shipping documentation, and project coordination.
• CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) certification is a plus.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with both shop teams and upper management.

Preferred:

• Bilingual in English and Spanish.
• Familiarity with commercial/industrial steel erection and delivery requirements.
