Job summary

WW Clyde is seeking a Quality Control Lab Technician in Safford, AZ to conduct sampling and testing of concrete, aggregates, and asphalt for project specifications. The role focuses on concrete testing in the lab, including curing and strength testing, with some travel to pits and plants.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Receive, log, and cure concrete cylinders and beams, and maintain curing conditions per ASTM and AASHTO requirements.
• Test concrete specimens for compressive and flexural strength.
• Perform fresh concrete testing (slump, air content, unit weight, temperature).
• Test aggregate production and shipping samples (gradation, specific gravity, moisture).
• Test asphalt samples, including binder content and gradation.
• Support mix design development and verification testing.
• Travel to project sites, pits, and plants to collect samples.
• Enter test data into the lab database and maintain records.
• Calibrate, maintain, and clean lab equipment; keep lab organized.
• Maintain safe work environment and follow WW Clyde safety requirements.

Overview

POSITION: Quality Control Lab Technician

LOCATION: Safford, AZ

PAY: $20.00 – $30.00 per hour, depending on experience and certifications

JOB SUMMARY

The Quality Control Lab Technician performs sampling and testing of concrete, aggregates, and asphalt for WW Clyde projects and operations, with a primary focus on concrete. Testing is performed in accordance with ADOT, ASTM, AASHTO, and project specifications.

Most of the work takes place in the lab, including curing and strength testing of concrete specimens, aggregate testing, and asphalt testing. The role also includes local travel to aggregate pits, plants, and project sites to collect samples.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Receive, log, and cure concrete cylinders and beams, and maintain curing conditions per ASTM and AASHTO requirements.
• Prepare and test concrete specimens for compressive and flexural strength, including capping and break testing.
• Perform fresh concrete testing for trial batches and field support, including slump, air content, unit weight, temperature, and casting test specimens.
• Test aggregate production and shipping samples, including gradation, fineness modulus, specific gravity, absorption, and moisture content.
• Test asphalt samples, including binder content, gradation, and volumetric properties.
• Support concrete and asphalt mix design development, trial batches, and verification testing.
• Travel to project sites, aggregate pits, and plants to collect samples, and split and reduce samples for testing.
• Report test results promptly to the Lab Supervisor, plant personnel, and project teams, and flag results that fall outside specification.
• Enter test data into the lab database and maintain accurate records, sample tracking, and quality assurance sample storage.
• Calibrate, maintain, and clean lab testing equipment, and keep the lab organized.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to obtain ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I and ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician certifications within 6 months of hire.
• Working knowledge of concrete, aggregate, and asphalt materials and industry quality standards, and willingness to learn all lab testing equipment and procedures.
• Intermediate computer skills and basic math for test calculations.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
• Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.

PREFERRED

• Two years of concrete, aggregate, or asphalt QA or QC testing experience.
• Current ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I and ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician certifications.
• ACI Aggregate Testing Technician or ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician certification.
• WAQTC certifications, including CTT (Concrete), AgTT (Aggregate), and AsTT (Asphalt).
• UDOT TTQP qualification.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience with a lab database or lab information management system.
• Experience on ADOT projects.
• MSHA training.
• Bilingual English/Spanish.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Sitting: 20% of time.
• Standing: 80% of time.
• Driving: Local travel, mostly limited to 150 miles a day, to aggregate pits, plants, and project sites.
• Lifting: Must frequently be able to safely lift and carry 70 to 100 lbs, including full sample buckets, concrete cylinders, and bagged materials. Coworkers can assist with heavy objects. May occasionally lift items overhead.
• Physical Movement: Frequently walk over uneven ground, balance, stoop, crouch, kneel, and grab and hold objects. Repetitive tasks throughout the day include carrying and lifting full buckets, splitting samples, and handling test specimens.
• Speaking and Listening: Must communicate clearly with supervisors and coworkers, particularly in understanding and following instructions and safety requirements with precision.
• Working Conditions: Approximately 20% of time outdoors in the elements. Lab work includes exposure to dust, heat from ovens, wet curing areas, and equipment noise.
