Job summary

WW Clyde seeks a Quality Control – Field Technician to support project teams across northern and western Arizona by sampling and testing construction materials in field and lab settings.

You will verify aggregates, asphalt, soils, and concrete meet specifications and report results to project teams. Travel with overnight stays required; outdoor field work in varying weather conditions is common.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Willingness to travel throughout northern and western Arizona, including overnight stays.
• Certifications within 6 months of hire preferred (ATTI Field Technician, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I).
• Experience with ADOT/ASTM/AASHTO specs is advantageous.
• Must have valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Sample and test aggregates, soils, base, hot mix asphalt, and concrete in field and lab per project specs.
• Test stockpiled materials at crusher/plant/jobsite, including gradation and mix design verification.
• Perform in-place density testing and core sampling as required.
• Conduct concrete field tests (slump, air content, temp) and prepare cylinders.
• Interpret project specs to determine testing frequency and acceptance.

Overview

POSITION: Quality Control – Field Technician

LOCATION: Taylor, AZ area. Travel to project sites throughout northern and western Arizona, including overnight stays when projects are out of town.

PAY: $20.00 – $30.00 per hour, depending on experience and certifications

JOB SUMMARY

The Quality Control Field Technician supports WW Clyde project teams and crews across northern and western Arizona by sampling and testing construction materials in the field and laboratory. Testing covers aggregates, hot mix asphalt, soils, base, and concrete, performed in accordance with ADOT, ASTM, AASHTO, and project specifications.

This role works directly with crushing, plant, and paving operations to verify materials meet requirements before and during production, and communicates results to project teams as work progresses.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Sample and test aggregates, soils, base, hot mix asphalt, and concrete in the field and laboratory per ADOT, ASTM, AASHTO, and project specifications.
• Sample and test stockpiled aggregate and hot mix asphalt at the crusher, plant, and jobsite, including gradation, asphalt content, mix design verification, and crusher control testing.
• Perform in place density testing on soils, base, and asphalt using a nuclear density gauge, and cut and collect asphalt cores as required.
• Perform concrete field testing, including slump, air content, temperature, and cylinder fabrication.
• Review and interpret project specifications to determine testing frequency and acceptance requirements.
• Evaluate test results against specifications and communicate them promptly to foremen, plant operators, and project teams. Make field quality decisions within your scope and elevate issues beyond it to the Quality Control Manager.
• Record and report test data accurately, and maintain testing records, calibration logs, and documentation used for statistical review.
• Set up, operate, calibrate, and maintain testing equipment, including safe handling, storage, and transport of nuclear gauges per radiation safety and DOT requirements.
• Attend preconstruction meetings and job site visits, and support customers and project teams with testing and quality questions.
• Help train crews and project staff on sampling procedures and quality requirements.
• Follow all WW Clyde safety and environmental requirements, including OSHA and MSHA at pit and plant sites.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to obtain ATTI Field Technician and ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certifications within 6 months of hire.
• Ability to obtain Radiation Safety Training for nuclear gauge operation.
• Basic math and computer skills for test calculations, data entry, and reporting.
• Strong communication skills, self motivated, and able to work well with crews and project teams.
• Willingness to travel throughout northern and western Arizona, including overnight stays, and to work long hours and 6 to 7 days a week at times.
• Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.

PREFERRED

• Current ATTI certifications, including Field Technician, Laboratory Soils/Aggregate Technician, or Asphalt Technician.
• Current ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification.
• Current Radiation Safety Training for nuclear gauge operation.
• Experience in construction materials testing, particularly aggregates and hot mix asphalt.
• Construction experience, preferably in paving or heavy highway work.
• Experience on ADOT projects.
• MSHA Part 46 training.
• Bilingual English/Spanish.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Lift up to 80 lbs, including loading and unloading nuclear gauges and sample buckets from vehicles.
• Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb stockpiles and plant structures.
• Work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, wind, and dust, and around hot mix asphalt fumes, traffic, and equipment noise.
• Work with nuclear gauges under radiation safety controls.
