Job Description
  • The Quality Manager owns day-to-day casting quality at the client aluminum sand casting facility, including machining, working under the direction of the General Manager.
  • This is a hands-on, on-the-floor role whose signature strength is root-cause analysis — leading the structured investigations that drive scrap and customers escapes down across all molding (nobake, green sand automatic, rotolift and floor) and machining operations.
  • Beyond solving problems personally, this person mentors the existing quality team to own root-cause and corrective action themselves, building a group that leads improvement rather than reacts.
  • The role also supports the company’s move to take defense work direct, including the requirements that flow into quality.
  • This is a direct customer-facing role: the Quality Manager serves as primary quality contact for customers and must communicate clearly and promptly to resolve inquiries and quality concerns as they arise.
Root-Cause & Corrective Action (core of the role)
  • Personally lead structured root-cause investigations (8D, 5-Why, A3, fishbone) on the highest-cost defects — sand inclusions, cracks, gas porosity, pressure-test failures, core defects, and dimensional non-conformance.
  • Drive corrective actions to verified closure at the source — with melt, molding, core, and sand-system teams — rather than catching defects at final inspection.
  • Mentor and coach the existing quality team in RCA and corrective-action discipline so investigations are owned at every level, not escalated by default.
  • Build the team’s capability to lead, not follow.
  • Familiarity with metallography, failure analysis, and the ability to distinguish between different casting defects would also be important.
Process Control
  • Establish and maintain SPC on critical molding, melt, and core parameters.
  • Own green sand property control (compact ability, green sand compression strength, permeability, moisture, friability), since sand condition drives a large share of casting defects.
  • Lead control plans and FMEAs and own the Layered Process Audit (LPA) system from operator through plant manager — including escalation rules and countermeasure-closure tracking, not just audit completion.
  • Strengthening the underlying process infrastructure and improving process stability
Defect and Scrap Reduction
  • Deliver measurable, sustained reductions in scrap and rework across all three departments.
  • Own cost-of-quality reporting and run a prioritized top-defect / top-part reduction program with hard, time-bound targets.
  • Track defect trends by reason and work center and direct improvement activity to the biggest leakage.
Quality Management System
  • Own and maintain the QMS (ISO 9001): internal and external audits, document control, management review, and registrar/customer audits.
  • Hold the plant compliant to customer, industry (ASTM / SAE / MIL), and regulatory casting specifications, including material certifications and chemistry/mechanical property requirements.
Defense-Market Readiness
  • Support the casting-side defense requirements the quality function owns: MIL specifications, customer/government source inspection, first-article inspection (FAI), full lot traceability, and material/chemistry certifications.
  • Support the organization’s CMMC Level 2 effort where it intersects with quality — controlled handling, document/records control, and traceability of controlled technical data — partnering with IT and leadership who lead the cybersecurity side.
  • Manage customer quality: complaints/CARs, containment, returns, FAI, and PPAP/APQP submissions and source-inspection support.
  • Prevent escapes through robust final inspection, NDT (radiographic/X-ray, dye penetrant, pressure/leak testing, magnetic particle as applicable), and disciplined containment.
  • Serve as a primary quality point of contact for customers — lead quality discussions, respond to inquiries promptly and clearly, and host customer and source-inspection visits and audits.
  • Communicate root-cause findings, containment, and corrective-action status to customers in clear, professional terms (8D / CAPA reports), keeping them informed through to resolution and protecting the customer relationship.
  • Translate customer specifications, drawings, and expectations into clear internal requirements the floor can execute, confirming mutual understanding before production.
  • Run incoming/supplier quality for alloy ingot, sand, binders, cores, and outside processing.
  • Drive supplier quality through clear communication of non-conformances and supplier corrective-action requests (SCARs) — verifying effectiveness, holding suppliers to agreed standards, and building working relationships that resolve issues quickly.
Metallurgical & Lab
  • Oversee the metallurgical and sand lab: chemistry (spectrometer), mechanical testing, microstructure, and sand testing.
  • Drive first-time chemistry hit rates and metal-quality standards.
  • Manage calibration and measurement systems analysis (gage control, MSA / Gage R&R)
Safety Equipment Requirement
  • The use of appropriate safety equipment as described below is a condition of employment and not one of choice.
  • While some tasks may require additional PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), standard safety equipment that must be worn while on the floor as follows:
