Highlands Oncology began in 1996 with three physicians and a desire to change the face of oncology care in our community. Dr. Malcolm Hayward, Dr. Dan Bradford, and Dr. Thad Beck knew that patients do better at home, in the community where they live and work, and where their support system is already in place. In furthering that goal, Highlands has grown with the region from a single location 26 years ago, to 6 locations in Northwest and Northcentral Arkansas today employing more than 800 diverse team members.

Job Summary:

  • A “Bilingual Employee” that has successfully completed the Qualified Interpreter program chosen by Highlands Oncology or possesses an accepted National Interpreter Certification and is classified in Human Resources as a Highlands Qualified Interpreter. Certifications outside of the Highlands Qualified Interpreter program are accepted at the discretion of Highlands Oncology.
  • Defined by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care, a Qualified Interpreter is also, “an individual, who has been assessed for professional skills, demonstrates a high level of proficiency in at least two languages and has the appropriate training and experience to interpret with skill and accuracy while adhering to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice published by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care.”
  • Defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) qualified interpreters include the following:
    • Proficient in speaking and understanding both spoken English and at least one other spoken language, including any necessary specialized vocabulary, terminology, and phraseology.
    • Able to effectively, accurately, and impartially communicate directly with individuals with limited English proficiency in their primary languages.

Job Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Precisely and accurately interprets critical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient's native language.
  • Assists in translating medical text from English on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested.
  • Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees.
  • Assists with patient follow-up as necessary, to include, but not limited to contacting patients via phone regarding: Scheduling information, appointment reminders, lab results, medication refills, nurse case management interaction.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with Highland’s policies.
  • Provides occasional services outside of normal working hours on as as-needed basis.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Performs job duties as outlined in primary job description.
Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficient in speaking and understanding both spoken English and at least one other spoken language, including any necessary specialized vocabulary, medical terminology, and phraseology, and ability to effectively, accurately, and impartially, communicate directly with individuals with limited English proficiency in their primary language.
  • Employee must be fluent in English in both written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with staff.
  • Must be able to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Detail oriented. Must have a pleasant and friendly voice over the phone.
  • Fluency in relevant foreign language(s).
  • Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Foreign language(s) written translation skills.
  • Listening skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations.

Certifications/Licenses/Education/or Experience in a related field:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of the Highlands Qualified Interpreter Program with a passing score.
  • Oral proficiency level as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages as an Advanced Low or higher. (Testing to be completed prior to program application).

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Sitting at a computer for long periods of time, occurs greater than 2/3’s of working hours.
  • Standing/Walking less than 1/3 of working hours.
  • Reaching, pushing, pulling, gripping, neck rotation and extension, and exposure to noise greater than 2/3’s of working hours.
  • Visual Acuity: Near with clarity at 20 inches or less and far with clarity at 20ft or more greater than 90% of working hours.
  • Requires Keyboard and mouse usage for greater than 90% of working hours.
  • May require occasional travel between clinic locations.
