Job description

Conducts chemical and physical laboratory tests of raw material and paint samples and analyzes data by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Calibrate and use laboratory instrumentation and equipment required for tests, research and quality control.
  2. Conduct qualitative and quantitative testing of paints and raw materials associated with products.
  3. Makes laboratory batches of water and solvent-based paint formulations and document results.
  4. Tests and analyzes products such as paints and coatings to determine tint strength, gloss, viscosity, density, sag resistance, flow & level, pH and other characteristics.
  5. Assists the Quality Control Department by testing and adjusting batches from production.
  6. Checks shelf stability oven retain samples and report results.
  7. Files drawdowns of batches in production.
  8. Cleans laboratory benches, paints floor and dusts all equipment.
  9. Maintain and rotate standards for comparison to production batches.
  10. Assists with Safety Inspections by performing weekly checks.
  11. Assists with the Recycling Programs related to the County and Richards products.
  12. Analyzes competitive products to determine physical properties.
  13. Assists with Complaint Resolution by checking retains and reporting findings.

Computer Skills

Basic computer skills: Computer Color Matching Spectrophotometer, Excel, Word, and Batchmaster a plus.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety data sheets, safety rules, procedure manuals, operating and maintenance instructions. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical & Chemical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, extrapolations, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to understand basic chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and the risk of electrical shock.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, hourly position, and hours of work and days are a daily 8 hour shift between the hours of 6 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday (Work hours/days can vary from time to time due to vacation schedules, overtime and other variables within the department that could require a temporary schedule adjustment). Certain Saturdays may be required as deemed necessary by management.

Education and/or Experience

  1. Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED
  2. Technical school diploma a plus
  3. College Diploma a plus
  4. Quality Control related experience especially in the coatings manufacturing industry highly desirable
