Job summary

Mid-State Industrial Maintenance seeks a QA/QC Inspector / Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) for field work across outage, maintenance, repair, and capital projects at power generation and heavy industrial facilities. Job Title: QA/QC Inspector / CWI - Field

Job Summary

As a QA/QC Inspector / Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), you will provide field-based quality oversight for outage, maintenance, repair, and capital projects at power generation and heavy industrial facilities. This position is responsible for inspecting welding, fabrication, boiler, pressure-part, piping, structural, and repair activities to verify that work complies with applicable codes, customer specifications, approved procedures, drawings, quality plans, and company quality requirements. This role requires extensive travel and the ability to work extended outage schedules, including nights and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform field inspections of welding, boiler, pressure-part, piping, structural, fabrication, maintenance, and repair activities.
• Verify work is completed in accordance with approved procedures, drawings, specifications, quality plans, customer requirements, and applicable industry codes and standards.
• Review welding procedure specifications (WPSs), procedure qualification records (PQRs), welder qualifications, continuity records, inspection reports, repair documentation, and project quality records.
• Interpret drawings, weld symbols, specifications, inspection and test plans, and applicable code requirements.
• Coordinate with project management, field supervision, Authorized Inspectors, customers, welders, and third-party nondestructive examination (NDE) providers.
• Monitor and document NDE and testing activities, including radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), hardness testing, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), and other applicable inspection processes.
• Support welder qualification testing, certification verification, and continuity compliance requirements.
• Perform receiving inspections, material identification, and material verification as required.
• Identify, document, communicate, and assist in resolving quality issues, deficiencies, and nonconforming conditions.
• Prepare accurate inspection reports and maintain complete project quality records.
• Support customer inspections, audits, project turnover packages, and outage or project closeout requirements.
• Maintain calibration and control of assigned inspection equipment.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

• Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
• Working knowledge of welding processes, inspection practices, quality documentation, and applicable repair requirements.
• Working knowledge of ASME, NBIC, AWS, API, and other applicable industry codes and standards.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, welding symbols, WPSs, PQRs, specifications, and inspection requirements.
• Strong documentation, communication, organization, and field coordination skills.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize inspection activities, and communicate quality concerns promptly.
• Ability and willingness to travel extensively and work extended hours, nights, weekends, and outage schedules as required.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
• MT Level II, PT Level II, or other applicable NDE certifications preferred.
• Additional customer- or site-specific safety qualifications may be required based on the assignment.

Education

• High school diploma or GED.
• Trade, technical, or vocational education related to welding, inspection, industrial maintenance, or a related field is preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of three to five years of welding inspection, quality control, or related industrial inspection experience.
• Experience supporting power generation, refinery, petrochemical, pulp and paper, industrial construction, or heavy industrial maintenance projects is preferred.
• Direct outage and boiler or pressure-part repair experience is strongly preferred.

Work Location and Travel

• This is a field-based position supporting customer facilities and project sites across multiple locations.
• Extensive and frequent travel is required based on project and outage schedules.
• Assignments may require temporary lodging away from the employee’s home location for extended periods.
• A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet company driving requirements are required.

Work Environment

• Work is performed in active power generation and heavy industrial environments with exposure to hot, humid, cold, noisy, dusty, and outdoor conditions.
• The position may work near chemicals, welding operations, elevated work areas, confined or restricted-access areas, and moving or heavy equipment.
• Required personal protective equipment and strict compliance with company, customer, and site safety requirements are mandatory.
• Days and hours of work vary by assignment and may include extended shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Overtime is frequently required during outage and project assignments.

Physical Requirements

Talk/Hear: Frequently communicate with project personnel, customers, Authorized Inspectors, and contractors and understand verbal instructions in active industrial environments.

Stand/Sit: Frequently stand or sit for extended periods while conducting inspections, reviewing documentation, attending meetings, or traveling between project locations.

Walk: Frequently walk through active industrial sites, including uneven surfaces, stairs, platforms, and areas around operating or construction equipment.

Use hands/fingers to handle or feel: Frequently use hands and fingers to operate inspection equipment, handle gauges and tools, document findings, and access inspection points.

Stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, or crawl: Frequently bend, kneel, crouch, climb stairs or ladders, and position the body to access and inspect welds, piping, structural components, and equipment.

See: Maintain the visual acuity necessary to examine welds and materials; distinguish relevant indications and conditions; and read drawings, procedures, specifications, and inspection records.

Carry, weight, Lift: Frequently lift, push, pull, or carry inspection equipment and materials weighing up to 25 pounds and, as required, up to 50 pounds.
