POSITION: Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer SUPERVISOR: Building Department Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer assists the Building Official in administering and enforcing building codes. This role involves conducting inspections and reviewing plans for construction projects to ensure compliance with Residential and Commercial Building Codes, as required by Michigan’s 1972 PA 230. The position also monitors compliance with residential builder license laws under PA 299 of 1980.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Enforce building codes in accordance with Michigan’s rules and regulations for construction.
  • Perform inspections for construction projects requiring building permits and provide inspection reports to permit holders.
  • Meet with customers to review current and future projects, interpret codes, and educate stakeholders about code enforcement requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with customers via mail, email, phone, etc., to maintain positive public relations.
  • Review building plans for compliance with applicable codes.
  • Maintain daily inspection and travel logs for departmental records.
  • Attend educational conferences, public meetings, and committee reviews to maintain inspector license requirements and stay updated on building codes.
  • Stay current with relevant construction codes and maintain state inspector licenses through continuing education.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Department Head.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with relevant building codes and regulations to ensure compliance with safety standards and project requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Proficient in using computers, tablets, digital cameras, cell phones, fax machines, and other related technology.
  • Ability to work in various outdoor conditions, climb ladders, access crawl spaces and attics, and navigate construction sites safely. A physical examination may be required to verify capability for these tasks.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience in a building or construction-related role (preferred).
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in the construction industry, particularly in structural construction.
  • Alternatively, a degree or certification in a construction-related field with an emphasis on structural construction may be considered.
  • At least 4 years of experience as a licensed or registered inspector and plan reviewer, either from Canada or another state.
  • Must be registered, or able to register, as a building inspector/plan reviewer within 60 days in accordance with PA 407 of 2016 (MCL 339.6001 – 339.6023).

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Must be registered, or able to register, with the State of Michigan as a building inspector within 60 days, in compliance with PA 407 of 2016 (MCL 339.6001 – 339.6023) and The Skilled Trades Regulation Rules – Part 10.
  • Passing the State of Michigan Inspector Examination is required to obtain both Building Inspector and Building Plan Reviewer licenses.
