About The Role
We need a senior Python developer with strong Python and Azure experience to build modular Python services and REST APIs for a building-sustainability calculation engine. The work covers energy, water, materials and embodied carbon.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, enhance and support modular Python services and REST APIs for the calculation engine
- Turn validated building science formulas, rules, assumptions and dependency flows into accurate, maintainable and testable Python components
- Develop and integrate calculations for energy, water, materials, embodied carbon, baseline standards, scenario simulation, explainability, anomaly management and cost, in the order the backlog sets
- Build reusable calculation libraries, data models, validation rules, configuration services and version-controlled datasets with Python, FastAPI, Pydantic, SQL and PostgreSQL
- Connect calculation services to the application through well-defined API contracts, structured inputs and outputs, secure authentication and reliable error handling
- Tune calculation performance, database queries, caching, async processing and scalability for global, high-volume use
- Create and maintain automated unit, integration, regression and API tests with PyTest, and support SIT and UAT
- Maintain technical documentation, API specs, calculation traceability, data dictionaries, setup guides, deployment notes and runbooks
- Take part in solution design, code reviews, backlog refinement, sprint ceremonies, release planning, deployment, defect fixing and post-deployment support
- Implement production-grade logging, monitoring, auditability, exception handling, retries and configuration management
Must have
- 8+ years of professional Python development delivering secure, scalable, production-quality backend applications or calculation services
- Strong modern Python: object-oriented design, modular architecture, reusable libraries, type validation, dependency management and PEP 8
- Hands‑on REST API development with FastAPI or an equivalent framework, including request validation, versioning, authentication, structured error responses and OpenAPI docs
- Strong SQL and PostgreSQL: data modeling, queries, functions, indexing, transactions and performance tuning
- Pydantic, PyTest, importlib, caching, configuration management, and reusable Python utilities and packages
- Turning complex formulas, business rules, dependency graphs or scientific models into deterministic, traceable, testable code
- Designing automated unit, integration, regression and API tests, with disciplined defect analysis
- Microsoft Azure: App Service or container platforms, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, secrets management, logging, monitoring and application support
- Using AI, generative AI, agents, scripting and developer tools to automate engineering work and improve productivity
- Secure software development, data protection, auditability, resilience, performance and production support
- Collaboration with product owners, architects, domain specialists, QA, UX, DevOps and business stakeholders
- Excellent analytical, documentation, communication and problem-solving skills, and experience on Agile teams across time zones
Nice to have
- Working knowledge of building science, energy and water efficiency, materials, embodied carbon, cost calculations or sustainability standards
