Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:
This position performs mechanical work on Public Works vehicles. Repairs, troubleshoots, and maintains electric, diesel, and gasoline municipal trucks, parking, police, fire, and other department equipment. Performs welding fabrication to repair city equipment. May be assigned tasks within the city for special welding fabrication projects to support other departments. Skilled in automotive, and truck repair, and performs related work as required. Responsible for supervising lower-skilled laborers while performing the same duties as the employees supervised. It avoids errors that may result in substantial costs from failing to maintain the desired standard in municipal service.
SUPERVISION: Works under the direction of the Superintendent of Equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Under the supervision of the foreman or Superintendent of Equipment, observes and listens to truck operations to determine malfunctions and plan work procedures.
  • Works on ignition systems, changing or recharging batteries, and replacing transmissions and other related parts. Overhaul of gas or diesel engines.
  • Performs preventive maintenance including repair of hydraulic systems, generators, pumps, and miscellaneous hydraulic equipment. Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on trucks and make appropriate adjustments. Lubricates and troubleshoots gasoline and diesel internal combustion engine-powered vehicles and other engine-powered equipment. Fabricating special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulics systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings
  • Dispenses fuel to authorized city vehicles. Repairs fire hoses and related apparatus.
  • Perform duties that generally allow the incumbent to act independently but with access to a supervisor who determines the course of action for any unusual problem encountered. Perform functions that are generally well defined and limited in scope, but which may involve the choice between two or more alternative approaches to well-precedented problems.
  • Work is generally limited to contacts with immediate associates but may, on occasion, require that the incumbent provide basic information in direct response to routine questions.
  • Work involves supervision of a small group of journeymen, craftspersons, and other laborers and includes assigning work, enforcing safety regulations, maintaining discipline, and reviewing performance. Performs incidental storekeeping work concerning parts, tools, and supplies. Repairs and overhauls power equipment and tools such as lawnmowers, snow blowers, compressors, pumps, jackhammers, plows, and sanding equipment.
  • Performs related duties as needed.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
  • 3 years of auto/truck repair experience.
  • 1 year of skilled metal, gas, and electric welding fabrication.
  • Valid Driver’s license.

License/Certification:
  • Possession of a Class B Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License with Air Brake Endorsement or possession of a CDL Class B permit upon hire.
  • Possession of a Mass Hoisting Operator 2B License or ability to obtain within the probationary period.

Preferred:
  • Automotive Vocational Technical School Certificate or A.S.E. Certified.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environmental Conditions:
Indoor and outdoor environments with a wide range of weather conditions, exposure to slippery surfaces or vibrations and noise; work on uneven surfaces, work with electrical energy; work with and around heavy machinery; work in or near vehicle traffic; exposure to dust and fumes from motorized equipment; possible exposure to toxic chemicals; irregular working hours for inclement weather situations and other circumstances.

HOURS OF WORK: Full-time (40 hours/weekly) Monday to Friday 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
SALARY:
Union PW-14 $1,185.16 - $1,360.05 /Weekly, ($61,628.32 - $70,722.60 Annually).
