BASIC FUNCTION:
Maintains and operates various types of heavy motorized equipment used in the maintenance, construction, and repair of the city's infrastructure and facilities; undertakes a variety of maintenance activities for public works and/or maintenance. This position works for the Water and Sewer Division of the Department of Public Works.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receive general supervision from the Supervisor, Commissioner, and Water Superintendent. Provides technical guidance to crew workers. assigned to positions of grade 10 and lower.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under supervision, operates various types of motor equipment, front-end loader, compressor, and jackhammer.
- Performs other skilled and unskilled tasks in connection with such operations.
- Under direction, performs tasks involving manual labor requiring the highest degree of skill in the construction, operation, and maintenance of water mains, water gates, sewers, and drains.
- Performs tasks involving manual labor requiring a lesser degree of skill and incidentally supervises the work or a group (not more than ten) of laborers engaged in such work.
- Performs related work as required.
- During snowstorms, this position supports and assists the Highway Division with snowplowing and removal operations as needed.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
- High School or GED.
- 2 Years of experience in the Department of Public Works.
- License/Certification:
- Hoisting License 2B Backhoe/Loader.
- C.D.L. Class B with Air Brake and Tank Endorsement (or six (6) months to obtain a Tank Endorsement.).
Preferred:
- Equipment Operations Experience.
DEFINITION of HEAVY EQUIPMENT:
Heavy equipment is distinguished from light equipment based on the weight/capacity of the equipment and/or nature of the work performed. The following equipment is classified as heavy: Crawler, Tractor, Road Grader, Dump Trailer, Front End Loader — 3 cu or larger, and Excavator.
Environmental Conditions:
Indoor and outdoor environments with a wide range of weather conditions, exposure to vibrations and noise; work on slippery or even surfaces, work with electrical energy; work with and around heavy machinery; work in or near vehicle traffic; exposure to dust and fumes from motorized equipment; possible exposure to toxic chemicals; irregular working hours for inclement weather situations and other circumstances.
Physical Conditions:
Essential functions may require maintaining physical, conditions necessary for sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods; moderate lifting and carrying which includes the ability to lift up to one hundred pounds; pulling, reaching, bending, climbing, and kneeling; use of fingers, both hands and legs required; must be able to distinguish colors and operate assigned vehicles.
HOURS OF WORK: Full-time (40 hours/weekly) Monday to Friday 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
SALARY: Union PW-10 ($1,177.74-$1,261.25 /weekly), ($61,242.48 - $65,585.00/Annually).
