Job summary

The PW Maintenance Worker positions reside in the Streets and Surface Water section of the Utility and Operations Division of Public Works Department and report directly to the Public Works Superintendent.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

PW Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in the PW Maintenance Worker series. This position performs routine tasks and duties using hand tools, small power tools and light vehicles and equipment. Positions at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skills as positions allocated to the PW Maintenance Worker II class and exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. The PW Maintenance Worker I class is further distinguished from the PW Maintenance II class by not requiring a Commercial Driver's License Level A endorsement on the driver's license at the time of hire. Pay range $31.45 - $38.27

PW Maintenance Worker II is the full journey level class within the Public Works Maintenance Worker series. Public Works Maintenance Worker IIs perform skilled and specialized street and surface water maintenance repairs and construction duties; operate trucks and equipment; may serve as lead worker to Maintenance Worker Is, part-time, and seasonal employees as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work team. The Public Works Maintenance Worker II is distinguished from the Public Works Maintenance I by the possession of a commercial endorsement on the driver's license and by full journey level maintenance work experience. Pay range: $34.72 - $42.24. The scope of the job is to perform a variety of skilled, semi-skilled and light duties in the maintenance, repair, inspection and construction of streets and surface water facilities, including streets, sidewalks, alleys, rights-of-way, traffic control devices, roadside vegetation, planting beds, snow and ice control, bridge maintenance, and minor storm drainage work, to assure the safety of vehicle and pedestrian traffic; operate the City's asset management system; operate a variety of heavy and light vehicles, specialized equipment, hand and power tools.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience
Level I: One year in a construction or maintenance related field.
Level II: Three years in a construction or maintenance related field.

License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid state-issued Driver's License
First aid/CPR certificate, and Washington State flagging certification, or ability to obtain within 3 months.
Level II only: Required possession of a valid state-issued Driver's License with Class A commercial endorsement

Job offer to the most successful candidate for Level II is contingent upon driving history review, a pre-employment drug test, and completion of a drug and alcohol background check if the individual has performed DOT safety-sensitive functions for any employer in the previous two (2) years.

Conditions Of Employment:

  • Prior to the start of employment, this position requires:
    • A successful completion of a practical skills assessment.
    • A successful completion of reference checks, including at least one prior supervisor.
    • A valid state-issued driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • The PW Maintenance Worker II position requires a commercial driver's license (CDL), licensures, or additional certifications.
  • The PW Maintenance Worker II position may require completion of a criminal background check prior to the start of employment.
Environmental Conditions :
Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease; potentially hazardous chemicals; inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; work on slippery or uneven surfaces.
