Automotive Technician – County Services

Department: County Services – Service Center
Pay Grade: Labor, PG-6

Do you have a passion for working on vehicles and keeping a fleet running smoothly? Are you skilled in diagnostics, repairs, and vehicle maintenance? If so, Allen County is looking for an Automotive Technician to join our team! This role is perfect for a hands-on problem solver who enjoys working on a variety of vehicles, from public safety units to essential service vehicles that keep our community moving.

As part of our team, you'll work in a well-equipped service center, performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on county vehicles. You'll also have opportunities to fabricate specialty parts, upfit vehicles with cutting-edge equipment, and work with a dedicated team that values your expertise and craftsmanship.

What You'll Do:

Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines, brakes, steering, powertrain, electrical systems, and more.
️ Perform routine and preventive maintenance (oil changes, tune-ups, tire replacements, etc.).
Upfit public safety and emergency vehicles with lighting, sirens, wiring, and other specialized equipment.
Fabricate and weld specialty parts to fit vehicle needs.
Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repairs in the fleet management system.
Install and activate GPS tracking units in county vehicles.
Assist with general shop maintenance and occasional facility upkeep.

What You Bring to the Table:

Experience & Skills – High school diploma/GED plus automotive repair training and 3+ years of experience.
Certifications – ASE Certifications preferred (but not required).
Technical Know-How – Strong understanding of electrical circuits, vehicle diagnostics, and repair.
Problem-Solving Ability – Ability to recognize and fix unsafe vehicle conditions.
Work Ethic – A strong commitment to quality, safety, and teamwork.
Tech-Savvy – Comfortable using diagnostic equipment and fleet management software.
Clean Record – Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Hands-on garage setting with exposure to temperature changes, machinery, and some noise.
Requires physical endurance, including lifting (up to 60 lbs.), bending, kneeling, and climbing ladders.
Attention to detail is crucial—accuracy in documentation and diagnostics is key!
