Job summary

SJE seeks a detail-oriented Purchasing Agent to manage procurement of products, materials, and services for its Birmingham, Alabama office. You will analyze blueprints, prepare cost estimates, and develop negotiation strategies while maintaining strong supplier relationships.

The role requires balancing cost, quality, availability, and delivery, and involves coordinating with engineers, project managers, and production teams to ensure timely fulfillment. Strong communication is essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; additional education or training in business, supply chain, purchasing, or a related field is a plus.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related technical or college training in cost accounting, finance, business administration, engineering technology, construction management, or a closely related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years related experience strongly preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge of material costs and estimating required.
  • Knowledgeable of design, engineering, construction and production principles, practices and methods.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable governmental policies, laws, and regulations affecting work activities.
  • Considerable skill in arriving at cost estimates on complex controls projects required.
  • Skilled in operating the listed tools and equipment and some skill in basic CAD, Industrial Controls, computers, networks, and PLCs.
  • Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain cost data, reports, and systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, to contractors, developers, employees, supervisors, consultants, governmental agency representatives, and the general public.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to evaluate market conditions and negotiate with multiple suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Review data to determine material, supply, and requirements to undertake a project.
  • Meet stated deadlines for bid submission
  • Compute cost factors and prepare estimates used for planning, management, engineering, construction, or production purposes, such as planning, organizing and scheduling work, preparing bids, selecting vendors or subcontractors, and determining cost effectiveness
  • Consult with engineers, project managers, production team, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues
  • Assist in the review of project plans as they relate to cost estimates
  • Source and evaluate vendors based on price, quality, availability, and service.
  • Obtain and compare vendor quotes to ensure competitive pricing.
  • Prepare and issue purchase orders in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Monitor purchase orders and follow up with vendors regarding pricing, availability, and delivery schedules.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Negotiate pricing, payment terms, delivery schedules, and other purchasing requirements when appropriate.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to understand purchasing needs and ensure timely fulfillment.
  • Research alternative products, materials, and suppliers as needed.
  • Review invoices, purchase orders, and receiving documentation for accuracy.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records, vendor information, and documentation.
  • Address and resolve purchasing, delivery, quality, or invoice discrepancies.
  • Monitor inventory levels and assist in identifying potential shortages or excess inventory.
  • Ensure purchases comply with company policies, approved vendors, and applicable requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs, improve purchasing processes, and increase efficiency.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

The Job

We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Purchasing Agent to manage the procurement of products, materials, supplies, and services needed to support business operations. This position is responsible for performing analyses of blueprints, proposals, and other documentation to prepare cost estimates for products, projects, or services. You will develop profitable purchasing strategies and prepare and implement effective negotiation tactics. You will be responsible for sourcing qualified vendors, obtaining competitive pricing, placing purchase orders, monitoring deliveries, and maintaining strong supplier relationships. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and negotiator who can balance cost, quality, availability, and delivery requirements while maintaining accurate purchasing records.
