Job summary

Sarasota County Government’s Public Utilities Department is hiring a Water Treatment Operator to ensure safe, clean water for the community. You will collect data, run analyses, operate plant equipment, and respond to emergencies while maintaining records and permits.

Starting roles include Trainee, Operator C/B/A with increasing pay steps; space in training for the required Florida licenses and a valid driver’s license. The schedule is a 40-hour week with rotating shifts and weekend coverage.

Qualifications

• A High School Diploma or equivalent
• Possession of a Class A/B/C Water Treatment Plant Operator’s License as issued by the State of Florida
• Valid Florida Driver’s License at time of hire
• Ability to obtain a Class “C” Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license within two (2) years

Responsibilities

• Collect, record, and interpret data for completion and utilization of operation and maintenance records
• Collect samples and perform chemical analyses
• Perform daily operations of pumps, motors, valves, and other treatment plant equipment as directed so that the plant will operate within the parameters of this operating permit and specific rules established by the applicable regulatory agencies

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, and other treatment plant equipment
• Perform housekeeping and grounds maintenance

Work Schedule

• 40-hours a week
• Set rotating shift
• Sunday - Saturday
• 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  

About You

Minimum Qualifications

Trainee:

• A High School Diploma or equivalent
• Ability to obtain a Class “C” Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license within two (2) years
• Valid Florida Driver’s License at time of hire

Operator:

• A High School Diploma or equivalent
• Possession of a Class “A”, “B”, or “C” Water Treatment Plant Operator’s License as issued by the State of Florida
• Valid Florida Driver’s License at time of hire

Physical Demands

• Mustoccasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds

• Frequent exposure to outdoor elements, including heat, rain, insects, snakes, and other wildlife

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

Starting Pay: $24.91 (Step 1)

Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience.

Treatment Plant Operator B:

Starting Pay: $26.13(Step 1)

Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience.

Treatment Plant Operator A:

Starting Pay: $27.45 (Step 1)

Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience.

Trainee Pay Rate

Starting Pay: $22.42 (10% Less than the minimum when in Trainee Status)
