Pump Station Operator/Construction Worker

Position: Pump Station Operator/Construction Worker

Department: Water

Reports to: Water Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent/Senior Foreman

FSLA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly based on Local 251 Collective Bargaining Agreement

Grade/Union/Hours: Teamsters Local 251, Full-Time, Third Shift

This position will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Town of Cumberland and the Teamsters Local 251 Union. Hours for this position are 7 AM to 3 PM. The role supports the duties of the Water Department. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As Pump Station Operator, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining tank levels
  • Operating and adjusting pump rates at various pump stations and well sites
  • Verifying that chemical feed pumps are in good working order and delivering the correct dosage
  • Making rounds to all infrastructure sites, including pump stations, wells, and tanks
  • Monitoring water quality (chlorine, pH, fluoride) and documenting results during shifts
  • Entering data into daily logbooks for chemicals, water production, pump rates, and pressures at all sites

The pump station operates 24/7, and the employee must be available for emergency callbacks, holidays, and weekends as needed.

When not assigned to the Pump Station, duties fall under Laborer/Construction Worker, including but not limited to:

  • Meter installation and reading
  • Hydrant flushing and repairs
  • Water main installation and service repairs
  • Maintenance of buildings and grounds
  • Valve maintenance, location, and operation
  • Preventative maintenance on pumps and infrastructure
  • Participating in emergency responses as declared by the Town
Education, Qualifications, and Experience

Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.

Must obtain a RI Grade II Treatment Operator License within 18 months of hire and a RI Grade II Distribution License within the same period.

Must hold a valid Motor Vehicle Operator License.

Salary

The base pay is $25.22 per hour, with a $0.60 shift differential. Additional stipends are available for license completion and CDL holders.
