Play a key role in the collection of shellfish harvest and population data critical to the management of Puget Sound’s shellfish resources!

As part of the Puget Sound Shellfish Program, participate in intertidal bivalve population surveys, crustacean test fisheries, and bivalve shellfish enhancement projects across the Puget Sound.

Support shellfish management by conducting recreational intertidal and crustacean shellfish and squid creel surveys with a focus on intertidal fisheries.

What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Puget Sound Shellfish Technician will:

  • Conduct intertidal and crustacean harvest assessment surveys: Interview recreational fishery participants at assigned access points, implement interview procedures, record data accurately, and collect data to evaluate recreational harvest.
  • Participate in intertidal bivalve population surveys and crustacean test fisheries: Locate sample points, employ pre-determined sampling strategy, assist with survey organization, and spread clam seed and oyster cultch.
  • Office and lab work: Conduct data entry, error checks, and identify intertidal bivalve species in a lab setting.

Working Conditions:

  • Work occurs in an office environment and in the field, including in inclement weather.
  • Fieldwork is conducted at public beaches, dockside, and aboard various vessels in marine waters.
  • Perform strenuous land-based field activities, including carrying heavy loads and extended stoop labor.

Schedule: Typically, 8-10 hours per day, between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Flexibility is required.

Travel Requirements: Occasional overnight travel required seasonally.

Tools and Equipment: Laptop computer, GPS units, iPads, marine radios, and data collection equipment.

Customer Interactions: Interact with Tribes, commercial harvesters, fish and shellfish buyers, and recreational anglers.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Certifications/Licenses:
Valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • First Aid/CPR certification obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must complete standard trainings expected of all WDFW employees.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in biological field work and data collection.
  • Conducting harvester surveys in the Puget Sound.
  • Species identification and handling.
