Performs work to assist in the maintenance of Town streets and stormwater infrastructure. This is accomplished by constructing streets, sidewalks, and curbs; cleaning ditches; operating hand tools; raking asphalt and concrete. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Public Works Crew Leader.
The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
- Participates in street, sidewalk, and stormwater system maintenance and construction, including concrete and asphalt pavement.
- Conducts right-of-way maintenance and vegetation control.
- Constructs various right-of-way improvement projects.
- Assists in various infrastructure improvement projects.
- Assists with the fabrication and installation of street name markers and roadway signs.
- Installs thermoplastic striping and painted roadway pavement markings.
- Assists with traffic control.
- Collects trash along rights-of-way and participates in bulk waste collection.
- Participates in facilities management.
- Maintains various equipment and tools.
- Operates medium and heavy equipment as necessary.
- Operates weed eaters, plate tamps, chainsaws, mixers and other hand and power tools frequently.
- Inspects fire extinguishers.
- Assists with winter weather operations including salt spreading and snow removal.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in landscaping grounds maintenance; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; knowledge of various construction materials such as asphalt, concrete, stone and soils; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
High school diploma or GED and 1 to 2 years of experience in landscaping, construction, or similar trades. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position.
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of a commercial driver’s license (CDL) preferred. May require possession of or ability to acquire a North Carolina pesticide application license. This position is subject to Emergency Call Back during emergency situations and inclement weather.This position’s physical requirements involve very heavy work which requires occasionally exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking.
Work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently working near moving mechanical parts and traffic and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very noisy location (e.g. traffic, jack hammer work, construction equipment).
