Job summary

Chevy Chase Village is seeking a Public Works Supervisor to lead four full‑time Public Works personnel and coordinate daily activities for a residential community in southern Montgomery County. The role includes equipment maintenance, road and sidewalk upkeep, and supervision of contractors.

The supervisor will report to the Director of Public Works and may support during weather events, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum ten years of related work experience with at least three years in a supervisory role.
  • Proficiency with machinery, large equipment and vehicle mechanics.
  • Must communicate effectively in writing and orally and use computer systems and MS Office.
  • Ability to perform heavy labor and withstand varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise four full‑time Public Works staff and contractors across activities.
  • Coordinate and evaluate department work and schedules.
  • Operate and assist with plow/salt trucks during weather events as needed.
  • Oversee maintenance of machinery, equipment, sidewalks and roadways.
  • Respond to emergencies and support special events as required.

Job description

Chevy Chase Village, a municipal government in southern Montgomery County, seeks to fill full-time position of Public Works Supervisor. Position reports directly to the Director of Public Works and supervises four full-time Public Works laborer/drivers. Duties include working a base schedule of Mon-Fri, 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., with occasional evening, weekend and holiday event support. Position is also responsible for emergency response to weather, including plow/salt truck operation, and other events, the timing and duration for which may not be known in advance.

Essential Functions include performing a wide variety of manual, unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks in the maintenance and improvement of a residential community, including responsibility for machinery, equipment and vehicle maintenance; sidewalk and roadway maintenance and repairs; and landscaping such as the planting of trees and shrubbery. Major Duties include: organizing, coordinating and evaluating the work of full time Public Works personnel, contractor staff (for refuse, recycling and leaf collection, parks and right-of-way maintenance, etc.) and temporary laborers as may be required in the performance of all department activities.

Minimum Qualifications Include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Ten years’ work experience in related field; work experience must include a minimum of three years’ supervisory experience;
  • Proficiency and experience in machinery, large equipment and vehicle mechanics.
  • Must possess strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, along with a demonstrated competency in the use of computer systems, basic internet applications and software including Microsoft Office and others as appropriate
  • Must be capable of performing required manual tasks and withstand the rigors of varying weather conditions with the ability to perform heavy work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects or materials.
  • Possession of a valid Class A, B, or C Maryland Driver’s License or Commercial Driver’s License and a minimum of two years’ driving experience. The incumbent must possess and be able to maintain a DL-171 card (DOT physical card) pursuant to Maryland law.

Full background investigation, including driving records, will be conducted prior to a final offer of employment. Salary range: $63,814 to $110,593/annual (Grade 14); generous benefits package including health (medical, dental, vision and prescription coverage) and life insurance, as well as retirement. Holiday pay, and annual (vacation) and sick leave provided; position eligible for overtime compensation.

Hiring range, depending on qualifications, is $63,814 to $69,056.
