Job summary

The City of Idaho Falls is seeking a Street Operator-in-Training to join the Public Works team. This hands-on role involves building and maintaining city streets, alleys, storm drains, and City property, outdoors and in variable weather.

You'll gain practical skills while contributing to safe, clean streets and infrastructure, including practical training under supervision, and the chance to advance in public service with a strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform above duties.
• Some experience in the operation of heavy-duty trucks preferred
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Some knowledge of city geography; basic maintenance procedures; hazards and safety precautions; operation of standard hand and power tools.
• Some skill in the operation of standard hand tools and heavy-duty trucks.
• Ability to work in all weather extremes; perform strenuous physical labor; operate small vehicles; follow instructions; communicate effectively; build relationships with others.

Responsibilities

• Uses a variety of hand tools (shovels, rakes, picks, brooms, etc.) to sweep, dig, and maintain streets and sidewalks.
• Loads or unloads supplies; lifts and carries materials for street maintenance and city properties.
• Prepares ground for asphalt, concrete, or pre-mix applications and assists in patch repair work.
• Operates small power tools, tampers, snow blower, or roller; may drive a small vehicle to transport materials; checks equipment daily for safety.
• Sets up and removes barricades; places pavement markings and street signs; assists in snow removal and flood control duties.
• Operates sanding trucks and snowplows; may operate dump trucks as needed.
• Performs related duties as required.
