A local government office seeks a Senior Maintenance Specialist to operate heavy equipment and perform maintenance tasks. This role entails ensuring safe operations, assisting in public works projects, and performing various labor-intensive tasks in all weather conditions. Candidates must have a high school diploma and a valid commercial driver's license.
General Definition of Work Performs difficult skilled trades work operating a variety of medium to heavy automotive, construction, and specialty equipment, maintaining and performing minor maintenance on assigned equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Essential Functions - Operates a variety of medium to heavy equipment such as motor grader, track hoe, jet rodder, sweeper, thermal-lay, backhoe, front-end loader, dump truck, tractors, and similar motorized vehicles and small equipment. - Operates backhoe to cut and remove asphalt street sections, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters for patch or reconstruction; digs trenches, storm drains, and culverts. - Assists with paving potholes and repairing utility cuts, water and sewer lines, raising valves, and manhole covers in preparation for resurfacing, constructing curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, cleaning catch basins and other tasks. - Operates motor grader equipment to clear rights-of-ways; performs fine grading on roads and ditches; ensures grades for roads; grades areas for curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; loads dirt, stone, and sand on trucks; removes heavy brush, debris, and trash. - Operates landscaping equipment and performs a variety of grounds keeping tasks; maintains landscaped areas.
- Operates equipment in street and pedestrian traffic, around other ground utilities, and in other tight places requiring care and skill. - Performs minor repairs and maintenance to assigned equipment; cleans and washes equipment on a periodic basis. - Operates light and medium equipment; trains new employees on assigned equipment. - Assists with snow removal and ice control. - May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; skill in the operation of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Education and Experience High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the operation of motorized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
Special Requirements - Obtain CPR, First Aid, and Flagger certifications within six months of hire. - Valid commercial driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. - Complete Basic Work Zone Traffic Control training within six months of hire.
