Job summary

McKenzie County Public Works is seeking an Operator to operate heavy equipment and trucks to maintain roads, bridges, and rights-of-way across McKenzie County. The role mainly supports the Dirt Crew and involves transporting materials, performing drainage work, and assisting in road construction and rehabilitation.

The position requires CDL Class A with tanker preferred, strong teamwork, and the ability to report daily to Watford City, ND.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent (Preferred).
• 1 year experience truck driving OR 3 years’ experience operating heavy equipment.
• Valid Class A CDL required; tanker endorsement preferred.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
• Must report to Watford City, ND daily at required schedule time.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment (dozer, grader, loader, backhoe, mower, excavator) for road maintenance and related tasks.
• Operate dump truck for delivering materials and tractor-trailer for equipment transport.
• Install and maintain drainage structures, signs, and safety devices on county roads.
• Prepare roads for accessibility, including shoulder work, gravel, and paving prep.
• Perform winter maintenance and snow removal; manage documentation as required.
• Other duties as assigned by the department.

Job description

The Operator position within McKenzie County Public Works is responsible for operating heavy equipment and/or trucks to maintain the roads, bridges, and rights-of-way throughout McKenzie County, as well as transporting essential materials. This position will primarily work as a member of the Dirt Crew. The duties listed below are representative of the work performed and may vary based on operational needs. The employee may also be assigned other related duties as needed. The schedule is 40 hours during the Winter months and 50 hours in the summer months.Level and salary commensurate with experience.

• Operate heavy equipment such as dozer, grader, front-end loader, backhoe, mower, excavator, etc. to perform a variety of road maintenance, repair, construction duties, and other assigned tasks relating to roads, bridges, and right of ways.
• Operates a dump truck to deliver materials for road work including dirt, gravel, and asphalt; operate a tractor-trailer to deliver equipment to work sites
• Install and maintain ditches and drainage culverts, guardrails, fences, roadway signs, traffic control devices, and other items and equipment that enhance the safety of County highways and drives.
• Prepare roads for accessibility, which includes preparing shoulder, spraying chemicals, laying gravel, etc.; assists in the building, repair, and re-habilitation of new and substandard roads, including culvert installation, road shaping, etc.
• Perform winter road maintenance and snow removal through plowing, sanding, and other activities to ensure that roads remain passable. Verify, file and maintain all documents
• Other duties as assigned for business needs
