The City of Lakeland, Tennessee, is seeking a working supervisor to assist the Public Works Director in supervising street maintenance, stormwater systems, signs, and related facilities.
This role requires a high school diploma and at least four years in supervising municipal maintenance crews, with experience operating equipment like backhoes, skid steers, and dump trucks. The position includes on-call duties, safety compliance, and coordination with residents.
The position is responsible for assisting the Public Works Director in the Public Works Department which maintains and repairs streets, stormwater systems, curb, gutter, sidewalks and ADA ramps, street signs, vegetation along public rights of way, and the civil defense siren system. This is a working supervisor’s position that provides additional equipment operator staff support in the field as necessary when vacancies occur in the nonsupervisory ranks and during times of needed manpower.

High school diploma or equivalency and a minimum of four (4) years related experience in supervision of a construction crew involving municipal maintenance and repair of streets, storm sewer pipes, equipment, machinery, buildings, and facilities. General construction knowledge covering carpentry, painting, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing is desirable. Must be able to use hand and power tools and operate other equipment necessary for performance of the job. Position must have a commitment to safety in all aspects of the job. He/she must have TOSHA knowledge of safety precautions, practices, and procedures and be capable of conducting hazard assessments and apply the appropriate PPE. The applicant shall be an effective communicator in both oral and written skills and be able to handle the public in their day-to-day responsibilities.
A valid driver’s license from the state of Tennessee. Applicant must have computer skills to include word
processing and spreadsheets. Must have minimum knowledge of mathematics and writing skills to accomplish the work described above. Must have experience to operate the following pieces of equipment: Pickup truck, rubber-tired backhoe, mini excavator, skid steer loader, single and double-axle dump truck, mowing tractors, and other light weight public works equipment.
