Job description

Under general and/or immediate supervision, performs a variety of maintenance and construction duties in the City’s field maintenance services involving street, sewer, asphalt, parks, and facilities maintenance, repair, and reconstruction work.

Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life:

This position is part of the Utilities/Streets Division, which includes:

  • Sewers: Maintenance and repair of the City’s sewer system, including preventive maintenance, jet rodding, CCTV inspections, excavations, sewer line repairs, manhole adjustments, confined space work, and responding to emergencies.
  • Streets: Installing and repairing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, ramps, asphalt and concrete surfaces, signage, striping, debris removal, herbicide spraying, and emergency response.

The employee must be able to:

  • Perform street repairs, including cutting out and removing damaged areas, asphalt patching, and overlay work.
  • Set up traffic control measures such as barricades and cones.
  • Maintain sidewalks, remove roots, use concrete tools, and load debris.
  • Construct forms, pour and finish concrete, and perform rough carpentry.
  • Maintain and install street signs, paint streets and parking lots, and mark facilities.
  • Clean storm drains, inspect and repair sewers, and degrease manholes.
  • Clean and maintain parks and public areas, including playgrounds and sports fields.
  • Operate various maintenance vehicles and tools, assist mechanics, and perform routine shop tasks.
  • Maintain landscaping, including mowing, trimming, planting, and fertilizing.
  • Perform emergency repairs and respond to public inquiries.

Working Conditions:

Position involves physical activities such as prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, and lifting objects over 25 pounds. Work is performed in all weather conditions, with exposure to chemicals, fumes, dust, and traffic. Climbing ladders, using power tools, and working with noisy equipment are required.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

The candidate should have knowledge of maintenance tools and safety practices, and the ability to perform various maintenance and repair tasks independently. Experience with street, sewer, or asphalt maintenance, and traffic control is preferred.

Experience: At least 1 year in a similar field maintenance role, with preferred experience in street, sewer, or asphalt work.

Education: Ability to read and write at a functional level.

License or Certificate: Must obtain a California Class "B" License with Tanker Endorsement within six months of hire.
