Job summary

The City of Ames is seeking qualified Maintenance Workers to support Streets and Utility Maintenance divisions. The role involves heavy labor, operating trucks and equipment, and performing repairs on water and sewer infrastructure with a strong safety focus.

Applicants should have relevant licenses (CDL, water/wastewater certifications) and at least two years in maintenance, with opportunities for skill-based pay progression within the division.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required, plus relevant laboring work experience.
  • Licenses and certificates listed under Skill Block I or II are required or obtainable.
  • Ability to operate trucks and heavy equipment safely per city standards.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates trucks and heavy equipment for maintenance and repair of city infrastructure.
  • Performs construction, maintenance, and repair on utilities with attention to safety.
  • Reads blueprints and MSDS; tracks materials and records usage.
  • Leads or participates in crew tasks and may supervise others.
