Under general supervision of the Road Maintenance Superintendent or a Public Works Maintenance Supervisor II, assists in directing and assigning work to crew engaged in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County roads, drainage, culverts, and related structures.
Follow Sutter County!Knowledge of:Materials, tools, methods, and equipment necessary to perform the maintenance and construction of county roads or drainage; operation and care of equipment and tools used in road maintenance and construction or drainage or sign and pavement markings work; safety principles and practices associated with work being performed; Dimensions and other factors affecting placement of traffic control and information signs; laws, codes, ordinances and other appropriate regulations governing the marking of traffic hazards and control patterns; the methods, materials, and equipment used in traffic control, painting, and sign making.
Ability to: Act as a lead worker over a crew engaged in the maintenance of sign and pavement markings, maintenance and construction of County roads or drainage; use appropriate tools and equipment skillfully in performing the necessary repair, maintenance, and construction of roads or drainage or operate painting, striping, sign making and related equipment; perform heavy physical labor; understand and carry out oral and written instruction; keep records and accounts of labor and materials used in connection with the work being performed; assist new employees in learning the skills of the position.
Education and Experience: One year of experience performing lead worker responsibilities on road construction, drainage, or traffic control sign and pavement marking projects; OR three years of experience in: traffic control sign and road painting work, road or drainage maintenance and construction, or any combination of education and experience that that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of manual labor; operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of daily tasks; ability to work around electrical currents and/or hazardous materials in a safe manner; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold.
License or Certificate: Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid driver's license. Must maintain a driving record that will meet commercial insurance requirements. May be required to obtain and possess a qualified applicator license upon being assigned the responsibility for drainage and flood control facilities.
