Job summary

The City of Gilroy is seeking a part-time Maintenance Worker Assistant for the Public Works – Streets, Stormwater & Trees section. The role provides hands-on experience maintaining public spaces, with duties including trash and debris removal, weed abatement, pressure washing, and general area cleanup.

You’ll join a dedicated team focused on keeping Gilroy’s streets and public areas safe and well‑maintained.

Qualifications

• Minimum twelfth grade education or a G.E.D.
• Six months of construction, maintenance, or landscape experience or training.
• Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record.
• Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
• Pass a Department of Justice criminal record check for employment.
• Subject to recall on a scheduled and/or emergency basis; may work varied shifts, holidays, or weekends.
• Prefer non-tobacco user.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine trash and debris removal in assigned zones.
• Dispose of garbage, litter, and debris as instructed.
• Learn how to operate and provide daily maintenance on equipment, vehicles, and hand and power tools as assigned.
• Assist in the preparation and maintenance of accurate records and reports.
• Assist in investigating service requests and complaints.
• Learn and conduct inspections as assigned.
• Perform disaster relief work as required.
