Job summary

Suffolk, Virginia, is seeking an experienced para-professional engineer/GIS technician to perform advanced GIS and drafting tasks for the Public Works Department. The role requires independent judgment and coordination with developers, contractors, and the public.

Responsibilities include handling plans for water, sewer, stormwater, and road facilities, maintaining asset logs, and supporting public presentations. A two-year degree and 3–5 years of related experience are expected.

Qualifications

  • Two-year college or technical school with major coursework in civil engineering or related field; 3–5 years experience in civil engineering, water/sewer utilities, surveying or related field.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering for design and construction of public works and utilities.
  • Familiarity with municipal engineering objectives and codes governing public works.

Responsibilities

  • Performs GIS related activities and drafting work for the Public Works Department and other City departments.
  • Investigates complaints from the general public pertaining to departmental services or programs.
  • Assists public and consultants with locating file information, maps, etc.
  • Maintains department filing system and records for private site and engineering plans, including electronic files.
  • Assists engineers, land developers and the public regarding water, sewer, stormwater, and roadway facilities in the City of Suffolk.
  • Maintains a log of department assets (sewer/water mains, pump stations, easements, streets, stormwater facilities).
  • Reviews plans for stormwater feature locations.
