Job summary

Park County Government seeks a skilled mechanic to maintain and repair a wide range of county vehicles and equipment in Public Works shops and in the field. The role covers diagnostic work, preventative maintenance, and occasional fabrication tasks.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, with vocational mechanics training or 2+ years of experience. A Class B CDL is preferred; background checks apply; some overtime expected.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform basic maintenance: oil/filter changes, grease and lube, tire rotation and balance, air, fuel and hydraulic filter changes.
• Sweep and clean shop, store tools and equipment after use.
• Paint and place decals on vehicles/equipment.
• Inspect and repair vehicles to meet Public Works and DOT standards.
• Document job time, hours and miles, parts used, and repairs; relay to proper personnel.
• Provide field service in emergencies.
• Repair/diagnose Park County equipment including heavy and light trucks, tractors, snowplows, sanders, spreaders, specialty equipment, and small engines.
• Replace components with guidance for complex equipment (hydraulic pumps/motors, conveyors, electrical/generation units).
• Operate vehicles to troubleshoot and test repairs.
• Welding and fabrication tasks (cutting, fabricating, soldering).
• Work safely and with quality; participate in Emergency Support Functions.

• Perform basic maintenance work such as change oil and filters, grease and lube service, change, balance, and rotate tires, and change air, fuel, and hydraulic filters.
• Perform shop cleanup tasks such as sweeping, washing down, and putting tools and equipment in assigned locations when finished using them.
• Painting and placing of decals.
• Inspect and repair vehicles and equipment to comply with Public Works and DOT (Department of Transportation) standards and regulations.
• Document job time, vehicle hours and miles, parts used per job, parts needed, and any repairs accomplished. Provide this needed important information to proper personnel.
• Help provide field service in emergency situations.
• Repair, rebuild, replace and diagnose problems within a wide variety of Park County equipment such as heavy and light trucks, tractors, snowplow equipment, sanders and spreaders, specialty type equipment, and various small engine equipment and tools.
• Repair, rebuild or replace individual components with guidance for complex pieces of specialty equipment to include hydraulic pumps and motors, conveyor and transport systems, electrical and generation units.
• Operate most types of vehicles and equipment in order to troubleshoot, test, and/or confirm repairs needed or completed.
• Performs welding and fabrication work, which may include cutting metal, fabricating components, or soldering metal components.
• Perform all work and functions in a safe and conscientious manner.

General:

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Basic knowledge of the design and function of diesel, gas, hydraulic, hydrostatic, electrical, and mechanical type systems.
• Ability to read and understand manuals, sketches, schematics, specifications and other shop related directions.
• Ability to plan and estimate jobs within the scope of assigned duties and responsibilities.
• Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.

• Must pass a background checks, the pre-employment drug test and motor vehicle record.
• Basic knowledge of welding (MIG and Stick) and use of Oxy Acetylene equipment.

Schedule/Hours:

Some evenings, weekends and holidays may be required. The normal work week is 40 hours. Overtime may be required for projects, emergencies and snow removal. Employees will report to their assigned shop or assigned work location and may be reassigned based upon needs of the Public Works Department. Operation hours are 6:00am to 4:30pm. Overtime may be approved or required by Fleet Manager or Director.

Nature of Contact with others required for successful job performance:

This position requires contact with employees of the Public Works department, employees in their division and occasional contact with other Park County departments.

Responsibility for Property, Materials, Money and Confidential Information:

This position is responsible for the equipment used in the performance of the job including but not limited to tools, materials and the vehicles being worked on. The use of Park County vehicles is provided in performing certain job duties at different sites.

Working Environment/Physical Activities:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be exposed to dirt, grease and chemicals typical of a shop environment. This position may require exposure to adverse conditions including noise, rain, snow, and extremes of temperatures. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, lay and stand, to use arms and legs, hands and feet and must be in good physical condition. Manual dexterity including the ability to lift and carry 75 pounds, the ability to drive both light and heavy-duty trucks and equipment as well as use various equipment and tools is required. Use of appropriate PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) assigned including safety glasses, hearing protection, respiratory protection, hard hats, vests and protective welding equipment).

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Graduation from an accredited vocational school in mechanics field is preferred or two years’ experience as a mechanic in the automotive, truck and heavy equipment industry
• Two years’ experience as a mechanic in the automotive is desired or equivalent combination of education and experience
• To achieve 50% or greater of pay a Class B CDL is required
• Must pass background check

Miscellaneous Information

Six Month Probation: At the end of the six-month probation employees are required to possess a minimum of a Class B, or A CDL including tanker endorsement.
