Job summary

The City of Independence, Missouri is seeking a Public Service Worker I for the Street Department. Under supervision, you perform a variety of manual labor in the construction and maintenance of streets, parks, airport, and other municipal buildings or grounds.

You must be able to perform heavy manual labor, operate trucks and light equipment, and work well with a small team. A high school diploma or GED is required, with availability for nights, overtime and weekends.

Basic Function

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Mows and trim lawns and brush
• Picks-up and disposes of trash and brush
• Drives vehicles and operates light equipment
• Maintains city vehicles
• Repairs streets, manholes, street signs, and water and sewer lines
• Installs water meters and dig meter boxes
• Services airport equipment and grounds
• Assists with maintenance of Memorial Hall as needed
• Performs additional duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

• Intense physical effort is required. Individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time.

• Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc.

SALARY RANGE

The starting salary for this position is $14.00 per hour*.

Salary: The starting hourly wage for this position is $14.00.

*Eligible for hire with the City after 720 hours with Express.
