Job summary

SEIU Local 503 in Salem, Oregon seeks a Union Organizer (Internal Public Sector) for a six-month assignment to drive member leadership and action across public workplaces. You will organize internal and external campaigns, support contract administration, and help members push for quality public services.

The role requires stamina for long hours, strong communication, and a driving license; comprehensive health and retirement benefits are provided, along with a car and cell phone allowance.

Qualifications

• Experience or background in organizing, bargaining, contract administration, political action, leadership development, and motivating people to take action.
• Demonstrated commitment to empowering workers through the labor movement.
• Experience working for social justice as an organizer or activist.
• Ability to work irregular and long hours and attend weekend/evening activities.
• Excellent communications skills required.
• Valid driver's license and current insurance coverage.

Responsibilities

• Organizing (internal and external); political action; training and education; assist leaders/officers in their responsibilities.
• Preparation for and negotiation of collective bargaining agreements; ratification of contracts; including work action preparation and recruitment.
• Contract interpretation; grievance handling and preparation and presentation of arbitration cases; setting up communication systems for information distribution and materials distribution.
• Advise members on steps to resolve issues and organize members to take action where appropriate.
• Preparing printed materials for distribution to membership; training members to interface with media.
