The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Division of Public Safety is seeking a Public Safety Telecommunicator to serve as the initial contact with the public by phone and in person. The role involves logging and disseminating emergency and non-emergency information to police, fire departments, and campus units, using radio, telephone, and computer terminals.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be able to type 25 WPM.
The Division of Public Safety is now accepting applications for a Public Safety Telecommunicator. The Public Safety Telecommunicator works in a fast-paced and potentially stressful environment serving as the initial contact with the public, both by telephone and in person. They receive and transmit messages and information for police and fire departments using telephone, radio, and /or computer terminal equipment. Telecommunicators provide assistance to several other departments on campus including Facilities and Services and Housing. This position requires a degree of initiative and independent judgement within procedural boundaries in responding to a variety of situations. There is potential exposure to unpleasant dispatches/report/conversations related to violent crimes. As essential personnel, the Public Safety Telecommunicators are required to work in-person without the ability to work remotely. It is imperative that people in this role are reliable and willing to work holidays and weekends.
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1164 - Police Telecommunicator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $25.80/hr.
