Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and supervisory experience in public safety or security.
  • Ability to interpret and explain regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Experience supervising staff and coordinating security operations.
  • Must hold a valid California driver’s license and BSIS Guard Card.
  • Pass POS T PC 832 training within 6 months; CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months.
  • Will undergo background check, drug screening, and psychological assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol campus grounds and facilities by vehicle, bike, and foot to ensure safety.
  • Investigate incidents and prepare written reports; maintain daily activity logs.
  • Monitor security systems and enforce campus policies and local laws.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and emergency responders as needed.
  • Schedule officers for coverage and manage crowd/traffic control for events.
  • Provide access control for buildings and respond to alarms and emergencies.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, the Public Safety Supervisor performs duties to ensure the safety and security on the campus for students, staff, faculty and visitors. Applies crime risk and safety hazard prevention techniques, methods, practices, and enforces University policies and procedures. Public Safety Supervisors monitor the security of the buildings and surrounding areas of the campus. May serve as liaison between external law enforcement agencies and the campus community.

This position supports the Department of Public Safety mission to deliver excellent support and services to students, staff and faculty.

Through its operational excellence, it advances the initiatives of the strategic plan, by ensuring goals are established, monitored and measured to meet the plan’s timelines and objectives and help create a vibrant and welcoming campus life.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic security principles and practice, public safety codes, policies and regulations
    • Record keeping techniques and report writing requirements
    • Basic computer programs such as email, MS Office suite, etc.
    • Supervisory principles and practices
    • Clery Act, Title IX, and the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
    • Current public safety methods and procedures
    • Current criminal codes and laws, and effective investigative techniques and procedures.
    • Safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department, including the Illness & Injury Prevention Plan.
  • Skills/Abilities (Supervisory):
    • React in an emergency and make sound, rational decisions, demonstrating good judgment
    • Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures
    • Plan, direct and supervise the work of others effectively

    • High school diploma or GED required
    • Previous Security or Law Enforcement Supervisory experience required
    • Knowledge and skills for this role typically obtained through a Bachelor's Degree.
    • Must have a valid California driver’s license and safe driving record. Requires a BSIS Guard Card
    • Must successfully pass P.O.S.T. PC 832 training or designated equivalent within 6 months of hire
    • Must have CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of hire
    • Will be required to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screening, and psychological assessment
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Patrols and secures campus grounds and facilities by vehicle, bike, and foot. Assists in the protection of life and property on campus.
  • Examines doors, windows, gates, roadways, and lighting to ensure security.
  • Investigates and submits reports concerning criminal offenses committed on the campus. Prepares written reports as required.
  • Completes and maintains records of daily activities including a Communication Log sheet with calls for service and building checks.
  • Monitors and reports on a continual basis all conditions which may create security or safety hazards on the College property.
  • Monitors the camera system to ensure there is no criminal activity at other parts of the campus.
  • Contacts law enforcement, fire, or other public agencies as required.
  • Assists public service representatives including fire, medical, and police with directions to emergency investigations.
  • Enforces College and local laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations according to established procedures.
  • Monitors incoming and outgoing campus traffic at the front gate location, answers incoming calls to campus security and dispatches information by radio to field patrol units. Provides information and directions to campus facilities, events, or other locations.
  • Monitors campus traffic and parking, issues citations for violations.
  • Provides crowd and traffic control for special events on and off campus.
  • Responds to complaints from the campus community and assists parties to resolve issues as appropriate.
  • Responds and performs access control duties including securing and/or unlocking academic buildings for faculty, staff and students.
  • Responds to fire, smoke detector, and security alarms and provides safety escorts.
  • Fill front desk assignments and answers calls for service.
  • Receive and fill out property receipts for lost and found items.
  • May provide first responder support for fires and/or first aid needs.
Supervision

Oversees the day-to-day activities of the College’s security including community safety, parking enforcement, and escort services.
