Job Title: Public Safety Officer Level I
The Public Safety Officer Level I is under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Officer Sergeant/Captain. The Public Safety Officer Level I and II patrol assigned areas of the campus, including offices, buildings, and parking areas, and report via telephone or radio. The Public Safety Officer takes action to protect persons and property, preventing fires, theft, vandalism, disorder, and damage to college property. The Senior Public Safety Officer on duty may be required to serve as the Officer in Charge of the shift in the absence of the Sergeant/Captain.
This is a Support Staff Union position as stated in the Support Staff collective bargaining agreement.
Responsibilities
- Attend and complete all assigned departmental training to standard.
- Work within a paramilitary structure with a well-defined chain of command.
- Arrive on time and properly attired (uniform may be required) for assigned shifts.
- Be available for shift and weekend work; assigned to multiple campuses as required.
- Record and report information concerning complaints and refer it to Shift leaders.
- Issue traffic tickets and/or warnings for violations of traffic/parking regulations and policies.
- Patrol corridors, parking areas, and roadways; direct traffic as assigned.
- Assist college population with jumpstarting vehicles, unlocking vehicles, and providing personal escorts as assigned.
- Provide emergency medical treatment (to level of certification).
- Complete reports of incidents and fill out work-related forms.
- Work indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
- Spend extended periods standing, walking, and climbing stairs; maintain a vigorous working pace.
- Answer telephones and communicate using portable radios and base station radios in compliance with department and FCC standards.
- Assist persons on campus.
- Operate department identification card equipment, issue ID cards and parking stickers.
- Possess good interpersonal communication skills; work as a team member; have solid computer and keyboarding skills.
- Keep work-related topics confidential.
- Be exposed to verbal and possible physical abuse by irate persons.
- Perform all duties without supervision.
- Assume Officer in Charge duties in the absence of the Sergeant/Captain.
- Assist in training newly hired officers.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
- Valid driver's license.
- 18 years of age.
- No criminal record.
- Must pass a drug screening test.
- Must have demonstrable computer knowledge and skills.
Education Required
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience Required
Six months related experience and/or successful completion of the contractual probationary period of work experience as a Rowan College at Burlington County's Public Safety Officer.
Skills/Abilities /Knowledge /Other Requirements
- No disciplinary action during the previous six months.
- A positive rating on evaluations.
Must Successfully Complete the Following Training Within 12 Months of Date of Hire
- Rowan College at Burlington County's Public Safety Officer Training Program.
- Workplace Harassment (as provided by Human Resources).
- Defensive Driving.
- American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR/AED.
- ICS - 100 (Online or classroom).
- IS - 700 (Online).
- Any other training deemed needed for performance of duty.
Officers in Charge Responsibilities
- Ensure personnel are on time.
- Ensure personnel are in the correct uniform and have the equipment needed for their shift.
- Ensure personnel are fit for duty and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Ensure personnel are briefed on any incidents since their last shift, special events, or duties for the shift.
- Ensure personnel get their required breaks for meals during the shift.
- Ensure that all work areas are kept neat and orderly.
- Ensure that all shift paperwork has been completed and properly filed.
- Pass on essential information to oncoming staff.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions. Work may require long periods of standing or walking and may entail a level of risk to the person. Shift and weekend work plus assignment to multiple campuses are requirements of this position.
