The Public Safety Officer Level I is under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Officer Sergeant/Captain. The patrols are assigned areas of the campus, including offices, buildings, and parking areas, and involve reporting via telephone or radio. The officer takes action to protect persons and property, prevent fires, theft, vandalism, disorder, and damage to college property. The Senior Public Safety Officer on duty may serve as the Officer in Charge in the absence of the Sergeant/Captain.

This is a Support Staff Union position as per the collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  1. Attending and completing departmental training.
  2. Working within a paramilitary structure with a clear chain of command.
  3. Arriving on time, dressed appropriately, possibly in uniform.
  4. Being available for shift and weekend work, and covering multiple campuses.
  5. Recording and reporting complaints, issuing traffic citations or warnings.
  6. Patrolling campus areas and directing traffic.
  7. Assisting with jumpstarts, vehicle unlocks, and personal escorts.
  8. Providing emergency medical treatment within certification limits.
  9. Completing incident reports and work-related forms.
  10. Working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  11. Standing, walking, and climbing stairs for extended periods.
  12. Communicating via telephones and radios, maintaining FCC standards.
  13. Assisting campus persons, operating ID and parking sticker equipment.
  14. Maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating good interpersonal skills.
  15. Handling verbal and physical abuse, performing duties independently.
  16. Assuming Officer in Charge duties when needed, training new officers, and performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications:
  • Valid driver’s license
  • At least 18 years old
  • U.S. citizen
  • No criminal record
  • Pass drug screening
  • Computer knowledge and skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months related experience or successful completion of probationary period
  • No disciplinary actions in the past six months
  • Positive evaluation ratings
  • Must complete required training within 12 months of hire
Additional requirements:
  • Ensure punctuality, proper uniform, and equipment.
  • Maintain fitness for duty, brief shifts, and keep work areas tidy.
  • Complete shift paperwork accurately and pass on essential information.
Working conditions:

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather. Long periods of standing, walking, and potential exposure to verbal or physical abuse are expected. Shift work and coverage across multiple campuses are required.
