Job summary

The City of Mankato Public Safety is seeking police officer candidates with strong critical thinking, effective communication, and a commitment to community policing. Both entry-level and lateral-entry applicants are welcome.

Applicants not yet eligible for licensing should expect to complete MN POST by January 1, 2027. Starting wages follow the 2026 salary schedule with progression after FTO and annual reviews.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in Police Science, Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice from an accredited institution (in-person instruction required).
• Licensed by the Minnesota POST Board or eligible by Jan 1, 2027 (academic and skills training completed).
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in Minnesota.

Responsibilities

• Performs duties in support of Police Division operations and community policing.
• Detects and responds to law violations and hazards to public safety; inspects areas for signs of crime.
• Enforces state and city laws; issues citations and makes arrests.
• Conducts proactive patrols in assigned areas; maintains public safety and order.
• Promotes Community Policing philosophy; builds relations with community and businesses.
• Maintains and documents investigations; testifies in court when required.
