Job description

Performs all basic police and firefighting functions including, but not limited to routine patrol, crime prevention and investigation; traffic control; fire prevention and suppression, responding to off-duty fires; cleaning/maintenance of vehicles, equipment and firearms; may be required to conduct crime scene investigations, and any other duties that may be assigned.


Ability to perform work out-of-doors in all weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 F. Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; Must possess the ability to walk, run, jump, stand, crawl, climb, lift, pull and carry objects weighing up to or exceeding 140 lbs. Ability to sit for extended periods of time in automobile. Successful applicant must have vision of at least 20/100 corrected to 20/20 in both eyes, and hearing in both ears within normal ranges. Ability to cope with claustrophobic conditions inherent to traveling through smoke-filled rooms; ability to tolerate heights; ability to work irregular hours with possible exposure to dangerous and hazardous situations.


High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess working knowledge of written and spoken English; must be able to successfully complete state requirements for Basic Police Certification and Firefighter I Certification; must possess valid state motor vehicle operator's license. Must possess good interpersonal skills; shall have and maintain a positive attitude and a high level of initiative. Must successfully complete written exam and oral interview, physical agility test, psychological exam, drug screen, intensive background checks and drug/alcohol screening. Must reside within thirty (30) miles of Sikeston City limits. Must maintain active landline or cellular telephone.


Motor vehicles; firearms; fire apparatus and vehicles; miscellaneous weapons; general public safety equipment such as, but not limited to radar, breathalyzer. Firefighting equipment such as, but not limited to, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), Positive Pressure Ventilator (smoke ejector), chain saws, axes, picks and hoses; firefighting apparatus, and all other equipment that may be required.


Applicant shall be required to submit to physical fitness testing, psychological testing and evaluation, and drug and alcohol screening prior to employment and at any time during employment.
