The City of Hopkinsville is seeking a Public Safety Officer to support police operations by performing non-emergency tasks. Responsibilities include traffic direction, accident investigation, and citizen assistance. Applicants must have a high school diploma and complete necessary training. This role requires a valid driver's license and the ability to handle physical duties under various conditions.
Public Safety Officer for the City of Hopkinsville Police Department will be responsible for performing non-hazardous and non-emergency calls for service, assisting police officers with routine duties such as directing traffic, assisting citizens and monitoring parking lots for parking violators. A physical agility test will be conducted on a future date to-be-determined and applicants will be notified of date, location & time of event after job advertisement deadline. Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Program available for eligible employees.Some weekend and evening work required.Evaluating evidence that can be used to decide fault and order of events; takes precautions to safeguard an accident scene to prevent further incidents; warns oncoming motorists of existing hazards and diverts traffic as necessary.
Survey accident scenes to decide best course of action in handling the scene & investigating the cause of the accident and evaluate facts of accident to decide if enforcement action should be taken.
Visually examine & inspect accident scenes for physical evidence to determine cause of accident and interview motorists & witnesses at accident scene to determine cause of accident.
Prepare and complete concise, accurate accident reports.
Direct traffic using hand signals to advise motorists what to do and maintains a safe and orderly flow.
Perform traffic control at construction sites or other special events such as parades and sports activities.
Accident Investigations/Traffic Direction.
Parking violations and citizen assistance.
Investigate missing person/runaway/minor crime calls.
Assist police officers with routine duties.
Traffic control at special events and sports activities.
Crowd control at special events.
Testify in court as needed.
Assist citizens.
Monitoring parking lots for parking violators.
Perform other duties as assigned.High School Diploma or GED
Must successfully complete 120 hours of appropriate training certified by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council prior to being appointed as a Public Safety Officer.
No criminal or felony record and applicant may be disqualified for multiple misdemeanors, an unacceptable criminal record, or multiple traffic violations.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Proficient in standard office equipment and computer programs.
Communicate professionally, in writing and/or verbally.
Maintain confidentiality in all job duties.Possess working knowledge of police procedures.
Knowledge of pertinent laws, ordinances, and codes pertaining to related operations and violations.
Must possess the ability to speak in public and to testify in court.
Work in field environment 90% of the time. Operate a marked vehicle during assigned duty time.
Lift and carry items weighing up to 100 lbs in a team setting.
Perform well under stress and deadlines.
Physical conditioning: Must be able to move, bend, stoop, and reach. Moves in and out of vehicle repeatedly during shift. Stands using both arms and hands to direct traffic for extended periods of time in various weather conditions.
