Firefighter

Under the supervision of the shift sergeant or staff sergeant with oversight by the public safety captains and broad oversight by the Director of Public Safety, protects life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances and the performance of general firefighting work. Performs specialized duties under emergency conditions; performs a variety of housekeeping and maintenance chores; and performs related work as required.

Essential Job Functions :

  • Enforce the laws and ordinances of the City of East Grand Rapids and the laws of the State of Michigan.
  • Arrests violators of the law.
  • Issue citations for parking, traffic and equipment violations.
  • Responds to department calls in cases of emergency.
  • Administers first aid and arranges for transportation of injured persons.
  • Patrols assigned areas and the school area during school crossing hours. May act as a school crossing guard as required.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Prepares and maintains required records and reports.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints and violations of the law. Interviews suspects, prisoners, complainants, and witnesses to obtain information and evidence. Searches for and preserves evidence at the scene of crimes or fires.
  • Serves subpoenas and warrants.
  • Responds to fire alarms, lays and connects hose lines and performs related firefighting activities.
  • Drives fire apparatus to the scene of fires and operates ladders, utilizes axes, shovels, extinguishers and other pieces of fire-fighting equipment when controlling and extinguishing fires. Pumps water at the proper pressure, oversees the operation of the pump and motor and makes necessary changes or adjustments. Operates SCBA as required.
  • Participates in fire prevention inspections.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the care and upkeep of firefighting equipment.
  • Develops and maintains specialized skills as required.
  • Maintains operational knowledge of all Departmental orders, policies and procedures, and maintains in a current condition all manuals issued.
  • Maintains and displays thorough knowledge in the application of motor vehicle laws and ordinances including revisions and relevant court decisions.
  • Develops and maintains driving skills in the operation of departmental vehicles in emergency and non-emergency situations consistent with applicable laws and Departmental orders / policies.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Director or designee.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • 60 college credit hours, preferably supportive of an associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Fire Science, or related field.
  • Not less than 18 years of age.
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Ability to successfully complete the MCOLES mandatory completion of basic training.
  • Physically and psychologically fit for duty.
  • United States Citizen
  • MCOLES certification.
  • Firefighter I & II certification, or the ability to obtain it.
  • Medical First Responder certification or the ability to obtain it.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, word processing, spreadsheets and various databases.
  • Displays skill in reading and writing written reports and communications relevant to work performed.
  • Ability to exhibit calm and controlled composure in stress and non-stress encounters with subordinates, citizens, and groups to resolve conflict and manage crisis.
  • Proficient in the use of handgun, shotgun and patrol rifle or the ability to be trained.
  • Driver's license and satisfactory driving record and the ability to maintain one throughout employment.
  • Physically capable of passing a pre-employment physical agility test.
