The City of Long Beach is seeking entry-level Public Safety Dispatchers to handle emergency calls for police, fire, and medical services. Successful candidates will be responsible for data entry during calls and may provide post-dispatch medical instructions. Applicants should have a keyboarding certificate and are encouraged to apply if they have bilingual skills or previous emergency communication experience.

Under general supervision, receives and dispatches emergency (911) calls for police or fire and emergency medical services; enters data into a computer while questioning callers; determines the nature and validity of calls; may provide post-dispatch medical instructions; utilizes computer-generated messages to dispatch units; operates communication equipment; performs call reception and dispatch activities; answers inquiries; accesses and transmits information; relays situational data; may train dispatchers and participate in evaluations; may act in supervisory roles; performs related duties as required.

Bilingual skills, experience in emergency communication, EMT, EMD, or POST certification are preferred.
Application and performance exams determine eligibility. The POST waiver applies if you have a recent qualifying score. This is a continuous exam, and eligible candidates are ranked accordingly.
