Job Overview

Under the direction of the Sergeant, Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Public Safety Assistant II (PSA II), provides essential support to DPS. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of the organization with skill in working in the security field and following all DPS policies and procedures. This role is responsible for performing a broad range of duties while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality. This is a uniformed guard position, requiring compliance with all current California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) guard card guidelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Safeguards Tribal citizens, assets, guests, team members, facilities, and operations by watching for unauthorized entry, suspicious activity, or crimes. Provides courteous, personalized interactions that align with established standards, creating a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors. Patrols and monitors assigned areas, including buildings, offices, and areas, either on foot or in a vehicle, to identify any suspected violations of policies, procedures, or laws.
• Works proactively with DPS Sergeants, providing essential support. Assists in training and developing PSAs to ensure optimal efficiency and smooth operations.
• Assists in carrying out investigations by examining and validating information through diverse investigative methods and interviewing pertinent individuals. Compiles written reports following departmental guidelines and presents oral reports as needed.
• Monitors designated areas, addresses service calls, observes and assesses situations, collects essential information, and drafts incident reports for cases that don’t need additional follow‑up.
• Maintains care and control of authorized equipment, issued uniforms, and departmental equipment and areas.
• Serves as a PSA liaison, concentrating on PSA operations to ensure peak performance under the guidance of the DPS Sergeants.
• Determines the need to initiate an investigation based on observations, and identifies, gathers, handles, and safeguards physical evidence as required, all in accordance with relevant laws, policies, and procedures.
• Responds to emergencies and other incidents, taking immediate action to control the scene, administer first aid, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitations and offer necessary assistance, and make any required notifications.
• Provides information and educates on relevant policies, procedures, and ordinances. Maintains positive relationships with internal guests, vendors, and team members. Employs a range of high‑quality communication skills and specialized techniques to interact with community groups and guests from all backgrounds, both formally and informally.
• Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
• Minimum two (2) years of security experience required.
• Minimum one (1) year of security supervisory experience preferred.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

• Must possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
• Advanced critical thinking and investigative skills.
• Must possess intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
• Working knowledge of security procedures, relevant State, Federal, and Tribal laws, regulations, and ordinances; proficiency in interviewing and interrogation techniques; and an understanding of laws related to search and seizure.
• Must have the ability to observe situations analytically, objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately.
• Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
• Must remain calm under stressful conditions, exercise reasonable judgment and make sound decisions especially during emergency situations.
• Must operate a motor vehicle safely and have knowledge of state and local motor vehicle laws.
• Must be well groomed and clean – hair must be neatly groomed and styled to remain professional and conservative.
• Must abide by DPS policies on uniform appearance.
• Must demonstrate the ability to produce well written documents with regard to spelling, grammar, punctuation, organization, and content.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS

• You may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license at the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission.
• Must comply with all current BSIS requirements for Security Guards.
• Must complete an in‑house three (3) week basic Public Safety Assistant academy.
• Must successfully complete a three (3) week Field Training Program and a 180‑day probationary period.
• Must successfully complete New Employee Orientation department training, which may include National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses.
• Must successfully complete all mandated in‑service training and obtain required certifications: Weaponless Defense Techniques training; Security details throughout the property and off‑site business locations, applicable policies and procedures training.
• First Aid Certification required.
• CPR certification required.
• Chemical Agent/Pepper Gel Certification preferred.
• Authorized Driver: Role requires operation or driving of Tribe‑owned vehicles or patron vehicles. A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS – ENVIRONMENT

• Primary work environment varies between climate‑controlled office setting, gaming facility and outdoor areas.
• Employee will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions: rain, wind, cold, hot climates.
• Must work long hours under difficult conditions, secondhand smoke and moderate noise levels (loud music), standing or sitting for extended periods.
• Work may include evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
• Must have acceptable hearing levels to properly monitor radio transmissions.
• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally or 50 pounds occasionally.
• Must be able to use hands or feet in self‑defense, use physical force, restrain individuals, break up fights, run after fleeing person, subdue, etc.
• Must have specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to focus.
• Must maintain endurance to sit, walk, stand for extended periods, and handle overtime.
• Must maintain acceptable level of physical condition.
