Job Description

Wentworth Institute of Technology Police Department is seeking applicants for the position of Public Safety Ambassador.

The Public Safety Ambassador is a non-union, unarmed, non-sworn position without arrest authority. The role patrols and monitors the university campus, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors. Candidates must have at least two years of experience performing similar campus or property walking patrol duties, along with work center experience answering phones, dispatching calls, and coordinating security responses. Strong communication, observation, and incident response skills are required.

Essential Functions
  • Patrol buildings, grounds, and environs of the university. Answer non-emergency calls for service, report emergencies and other incidents to dispatch and campus police officers, fill stationary post assignments when needed, respond to fire, smoke detector, and security alarms, provide safety escorts, and perform access control duties including securing and unlocking doors and buildings for faculty, staff and students. Handle administrative and academic door unlocks as assigned. Other duties as assigned.
  • Dispatch and coordinate the responses of the Police Department. Operate a multi-line telephone system, determine the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a computer-aided dispatch system. Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for response. Receive and respond to calls for service and complaints, ask questions to interpret, analyze, and anticipate the caller’s situation to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services, or refer callers to other agencies. Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment, monitor alarms for the entire university system while dispatching the proper response, perform queries and interpret information from CJIS, NCIC, and NLETS. Assist with lost and found property. Other dispatch related duties as assigned.
  • Identify vehicles in violation of university parking rules and regulations. Issue parking citations utilizing hand-held computers, check with the dispatch center when necessary to confirm identities or to determine whether vehicles need to be ticketed or towed, enter parking tickets into the records management system, and provide documentation for vehicle tows.
Minimum Requirements
  • 2 years of experience performing campus or property walking patrol duties, along with work center experience answering phones, dispatching calls, and coordinating security responses.
  • Strong communication, observation, and incident response skills are required.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Willing to work varying shifts and flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with an aptitude for problem solving and customer service.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, use good judgement, and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Will be required to pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening.
Preferred Qualification
  • Associate's degree, or vocational or technical school degree.
Position Details

The expected hourly rate for this position is $26.00. At this time, the university is unable to sponsor applicants for H-1B visas.
